An established neighborhood on the banks of the Red River
Sitting along the Red River in the far northern reaches of the Fargo metro, the fully residential neighborhood of Longfellow has a long past as one of Fargo’s earliest suburbs. “We have the biggest trees up here, we’re one of the most established areas around,” says Jenny Buhr, Realtor with Trilogy Real Estate and longtime Longfellow resident herself. “My kids will go out and play in the streets with all the other kids, they’ll run around, it’s a really safe neighborhood.” Nature surrounds the homes of Longfellow, from the open parklands to the thickets of old-growth trees that separate homes from the nearby river. Despite being convenient to downtown and only 2 miles from the airport, the distance is just far enough to make Longfellow feel like an oasis outside of the city, a small town that happens to be connected to the biggest city in the region.
Older homes, maintained with a sense of pride
Most homes in the Longfellow neighborhood were built in the late 1960s and early 1970s and sport the common design themes of the era. Single-family ramblers and split-levels are prevalent, usually sporting a mix of vinyl siding and stone or brick accents. “This part of North Fargo is very well maintained, people love this area so they invest in their houses,” says Buhr, who is also the President of Doorsteps Midwest, a non-profit that offers education for first-time homeowners. Colonial and traditional architectural influence is common, and almost every home includes an attached two-stall garage with a concrete driveway. Spacious front yards provide a cushion from street noise, while almost every home is shaded by trees that give the surrounding streets their names - Maple, Hickory and Elm are just a few. There are only single-family homes available in Longfellow, which drives the average price to nearly twice the overall Fargo average. Older homes with three or four bedrooms and 3,000 square feet of living space generally sell for $200,000 up to $400,000. Larger models with four or more bedrooms and over 3,000 square feet regularly get from $360,000 to $500,000. Unique older builds offering over 5,000 square feet of room, as well as the handful of modern contemporary builds from the 2000s, can go for $525,000 to upwards of $1 million.

A top-rated elementary school
The neighborhood gets its name from Longfellow Elementary School, which serves neighborhood students from kindergarten through fifth grade and gets an A rating from Niche. Students move up to Ben Franklin Middle School, which gets a B-plus rating, before finishing their public school education at North High School, which earns an A-minus grade. North is known for excelling in the performance arts, including music and theatre. For private school options, Holy Spirit Elementary School, part of the St. John Paul II Catholic Schools, is just southwest of the neighborhood. Students wanting to continue through the Catholic schooling system head south to Sacred Heart Middle School and Shanley High School for their secondary years.

Open space, organized play and 18 holes
Open green spaces like Holm Park and North Oaks Park provide an area to roam, but residents regularly flock to Longfellow Park behind the elementary school. Whether it’s the pop of pickleball play on the four courts, the ping of softball and baseball bats, or the shouts of the basketball court, there’s plenty of activity in the warm weather. A playground offers space for younger children to get energy out. In the winter, the ice rink provides open skating and hockey, with a nearby warming house to take the chill off. At the northern end, Edgewood Public Golf Course is an 18-hole facility run by the Fargo Park District.

The Red River runs strong
The Red River brings fishing, tubing and kayaking opportunities to the neighborhood – “I just went kayaking on the Red River for the first time which is terrifying because it was really fast right now!” says Buhr. Even though Longfellow is at a higher elevation than some of the Fargo neighborhoods downstream, it still deals with the potential for the river to break its banks. Most homes are set back enough to avoid major concerns – and a diversion is in the works to alleviate the flooding potential – but the sandbags still come out in heavy rains and spring snowmelt.
If you like fishing, Longfellow is the neighborhood for you as the Red River runs through it.

Residents can satisfy their sweet tooth
Longfellow is purely residential, so most residents head to nearby Northport Shopping Center to grab groceries at Hornbacher’s or household needs from Burggraf’s Ace Hardware. The Shack on Broadway is a North Fargo fixture and can be difficult to get into some mornings. It's known for homestyle fare, including massive breakfasts, and Buhr says they have the best caramel rolls in town to satisfy the sweet tooth. More dining and shopping can be found near the North Dakota State University campus, roughly 3 miles southwest.
Head over to Hornbacher's for all your grocery shopping needs.

A 15-minute drive to pretty much everything
Longfellow is very much a car-dependent neighborhood. Only the school is within convenient walking distance, and there is a single MATBUS stop in the southwest corner. The streets are fine for recreational biking but not as a way to commute. Downtown is a fairly quick drive – roughly 4 miles away, it can usually be done in under 15 minutes. While the Fargo VA Health Care System Hospital is adjacent to the neighborhood, for residents, the closest 24-hour health care facility is at the Sanford Emergency Center, 3 miles away, usually a drive of 10 minutes or less. Hector International Airport is 2 miles directly west for commercial flights, and the terminal is usually a 10-minute drive. Despite the vicinity, Buhr says that airport noise is rare, usually only during the Fargo AirSho.
Watch the skies come alive
Held every few years – sometimes with two or three years between shows – the Fargo AirSho brings military aviation teams like the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team to the skies above Fargo. Residents can even catch a glimpse from their backyards, says Buhr. On the ground, attendees can look over parked military and civilian craft. Tucked between the university and the airport, the FargoDome hosts events throughout the year that range from monster truck jams to the annual RibFest every June, which attracts nationally touring musicians and rib masters from across the country.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
