Older homes with slower growth than the rest of Fort Wayne

Equal parts suburban and rural, Northeast Fort Wayne has some streets where new subdivisions sit across from sprawling farms. But even though this neighborhood has seen an uptick in growth in recent years, it’s still one of the quieter parts of town. “It’s got a slower, more laidback vibe,” says Andie Shepherd, a Fort Wayne native and Realtor with Mike Thomas Associates. “It's an older area, as opposed to some of the other Fort Wayne suburbs that are growing very rapidly. It’s a bit more stable.” With homes both new and established available in proximity to Interstate 469, Northeast Fort Wayne avoids the buzz of the city without sacrificing ease of travel.

Spacious suburban homes and ranch-style houses on farmland

Though Northeast Fort Wayne quickly turns from dense residential areas to sparse farmland, there are plenty of subdivisions both new and old south of I-469. Some, like Cherry Hill, have large contemporary brick homes featuring arched entryways and generous square footage. Situated on manicured lawns along quiet residential streets, these homes sell for upper-end prices nearing $750,000. Others have cozier two-bedroom ranch-style homes on rural roads, listing at $125,000. The median price for a single-family home is $280,000, which can buy an established three-bedroom house built between the 1990s and 2010s. Most areas have well-maintained sidewalks for residents to walk or bike, but further out into farmland, folks are just as likely to hear horses coming down the roads.

Swing by Chapel Ridge Shopping Center for day-to-day needs

Most shopping is clustered around the entrances to Interstate 469. On the eastern edge of the neighborhood, residents can stop by the Chapel Ridge Shopping Center for groceries and other everyday needs from Meijer and the Walmart Supercenter. Most of the restaurants nearby are quick-stop fast-food chains right off the highway, but for local fare, the place to go is Shigs in Pit. A Fort Wayne staple for barbecue, it’s known for its selection of smoked meats and wall of craft brews served in a rustic counter-service joint.
