Comal
Private homes on spacious lots
Driving through Comal, homebuyers will find large homes atop the rolling hills of the countryside. Several of these homes are in private gated communities. Architecture styles vary, but Mediterranean and contemporary farmhouse-style homes are common. These farmhouses typically feature brick or stone exteriors with wood accents and metal roofing. Long driveways and yards full of live oaks offer added privacy for residents. These homes in the rural areas typically cost between $800,000 and $1.5 million. For buyers who want to be closer to their neighbors, there are new traditional homes in subdivisions, often with spacious built-in garages on the front of the house. These homes typically cost between $500,000 and $700,000 for a four-bedroom home.Well-regarded schools
Students in Comal might attend Veramendi Elementary School, rated an A overall by Niche; Oak Run Middle School, which gets an A-minus rating; and New Braunfels High School, rated a B. New Braunfels High has approximately 1,900 students and a student-teacher ratio of 19-to-1. The school offers career and technical programs in several industries, including agriculture, information technology and health science. New Braunfels is also known for its successful tennis team, which has won eight state championships.Traveling with ease through Greater San Antonio
New Braunfels is where most locals will go for shopping, dining and other everyday essentials, but Interstate 35 does provide a route into downtown San Antonio, about 37 miles from the heart of Comal. The interstate also gives locals a 32-mile drive to San Antonio International Airport. State Highway 46 also runs through the area, connecting I-35 in the east to Highway 281 in the west. I-35 and Highway 281 each give residents a north-to-south route throughout South Texas.
Texas' oldest bar
While most of Comal is rural, there are some dining options. Lone Star Float House and Grill is a seasonal riverside restaurant known for tacos and beer. This casual spot offers scenic views of the river from its outdoor patio and frequently has live music. Riley’s Tavern claims to be the oldest bar in Texas, with a history dating back to the end of Prohibition in 1933. Locals enjoy the nachos and live music at this long-standing dive bar. Nearby New Braunfels has several popular dining options, including Krause’s Café downtown. Locals enjoy visiting this German-style beer hall for the Reuben, deviled eggs and beer cheese. There are several grocery stores in New Braunfels, including an H-E-B in the WestPointe Village shopping center and an H-E-B plus! right off I-35. Residents can also shop at stores closer to Highway 281, such as the Sprouts Farmers Market on Bulverde Road. There is a Target along I-35 just northeast of New Braunfels for other household items.Outdoor activities
With Canyon Lake nearby and the Guadalupe River meandering through the area, outdoor activity in Comal is popular with both residents and visitors. “There is a lot of tourism. People come for different reasons, but it’s mostly water recreation in the summer. There are things to do year-round,” says Escalante. Residents can rent innertubes at several outfitters along the river and spend the day floating through the countryside. Canyon Lake has several parks along its shores, including Comal Park, about 17 miles from the heart of Comal. This 116-acre park has two boat ramps and a swimming beach. Visitors can set up a picnic and grill out or play a game of volleyball or soccer next to the lake. Natural Bridge Caverns is a family-owned cavern on Comal’s west side, offering walking and spelunking tours of the caves. Locals enjoy movie nights at Stars & Stripes Drive-In on the east side of I-35. This 1950s-themed theater shows movies year-round and has an old-fashioned diner for concessions.Cement Plants in the area
Comal is home to multiple cement plants, some of the area’s most significant employers. There is a Martin Marietta plant in the northeastern end of Comal and a CEMEX plant in the southwestern end. While these plants provide plenty of jobs, the CEMEX plant has also been cited as one of the biggest air polluters in the San Antonio area. The plant paid a $1.69 million fine in 2016 before adding extra pollution control equipment to the facility.
