Lorraine offers riverfront living near Gulfport’s beaches

The community of Lorraine is a neighborhood on the Biloxi River central to major highways, shopping, dining and the airport. Yet despite its proximity to urban amenities, the neighborhood maintains peace and quiet along densely forested riverbanks. “It’s established with lots of mature trees,” says lifelong local Randy Richardson, a Realtor with Century 21 J. Carter & Company. “There are new developments. A couple of builders are building out some neighborhoods, so you have a lot of opportunity.”

Styles range from classic 1990s designs to modern new builds

There is an array of contemporary homes here, many of which are new constructions and include elements of New Traditional architecture, complementing preexisting Minimal Traditional houses from the 1990s and early 2000s.
Highland Lake Townhouses brought modern multifamily units to the neighborhood, ranging from around $215,000 to almost $240,000. Single-family properties start under $200,000, with prices maxing out at almost $550,000. Options on an acre or more cost between $300,000 and just under $700,000.
Hurricane season runs from June to November and is a regular part of life by the coast, less than 10 miles away. The Biloxi River and Fitz Creek run through the neighborhood. Special flood zones surround these tributaries, and properties within them require flood insurance for federally backed mortgages.

High-performing schools include D'Iberville and North Woolmarket

The Harrison County School District earns an overall A-minus on Niche and serves the community with several above-average schools. Both River Oaks Elementary and Crossroads Elementary have B grades and educate students up to sixth grade. From there, students can attend North Woolmarket Elementary/Middle, graded A, or North Gulfport Elementary/Middle, graded B-minus, for seventh and eighth grade. Harrison Central High has a B, and D'Iberville Senior High earns an A. Both high schools offer dual enrollment with Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Private, faith-based schools nearby include Christian Collegiate Academy, graded B-plus, and St. Patrick Catholic High, graded A-minus.

Stingrays, sea lions and playgrounds entertain all ages

Eagle Point Park is less than 5 miles away with a playground, a pickleball court and a paved walking track. Lorraine residents are also a short drive from river access. A public boat launch and a boardwalk are on the Biloxi River, lined with towering pine trees. “You’ve got people who basically live on that river,” Richardson says with a laugh, an avid boater himself. “All they do is get on the water with skiffs, pontoon boats, big boats like for deep-sea fishing. They utilize the river to access the gulf and get out to the islands.”
The brackish waterway is rich in nutrients, ideal for angling a variety of fish, including redfish, sheepshead, flounder and cobia, also known as lemonfish. Those who prefer to observe marine life rather than catch it can visit Ocean Adventures Park, where they’ll see stingrays, sharks, dolphins, sea lions and penguins up close. They can even get hands-on by petting stingrays in the deep ray pool or feeding parakeets in the walk-through aviary.

Riverfront bars and seafood spots are popular local hangouts

Two local hangouts sit along the Biloxi River, right on Sandbar Lane. Orangutang's Daiquiris & Bar offers cold drinks and a warm atmosphere, with regular live music and river views. It’s within walking distance of Pier 15, a seafood spot popular with local boaters. Farther down the way, just past where Sandbar Lane merges with Lorraine Road, Taranto’s also offers a seafood menu, featuring famous crawfish po’ boys. As for grocery runs, Froogel’s is within a short drive. Gas stations, fast-food chains and a few auto dealerships are also minutes away, off of Lorraine Road.

Airport, hospital and highway are all within 10 miles

Interstate 10 runs along the south side of the neighborhood, and Lorraine Road has a ramp onto it. Taking I-10, New Orleans, LA, is less than 80 miles west, and Mobile, AL, less than 70 miles east. Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport is under 10 miles away, and the nearest hospital – Singing River – is roughly 5 miles away.
