Coastal charm in Hampton Roads
Located along the water’s edge of Hampton Roads, Wythe is a historic waterfront suburb of the coastal city Hampton, Virginia. Offering residents natural beauty and urban access, the community also celebrates its rich local history wherever and whenever it can. “Living in Wythe means living amongst some of the most historic, gorgeous houses in Virginia,” says Susannah Oskarsson, Realtor with Abbit Realty Company and longtime resident of Wythe. “And it’s so walkable and beautiful—it really offers a lovely lifestyle.” With a unique blend of coastal, suburban, and historic vibes, Wythe is an area worth considering for those looking to be a part of a charming community.
Colonials and Queen Anne
Homes in Wythe reflect its historic nature, and the area is known for its charming older styles. Many homes in the area were built during the 19th and 20th centuries and demonstrate traditional architectural styles such as Queen Anne, colonial, and colonial revival. Other homes include cottages with Tudor accents, brick ranch styles and charming bungalows. Prices in the community depend on the size and style of the home, but also the location — with homes on the waterfront typically being larger and commanding a higher price. Those looking for a single-family three-bedroom home can find one from $120,000 for a bungalow to $400,000 for an updated colonial or craftsman-inspired modern contemporary. Waterfront homes, many with up to five bedrooms, can go for as much as $800,000.
Hampton History, Virginia Air & Space museums
Being a coastal suburb, residents of Wythe have access to the beach and views of the water just about any time. Robinson Park serves as the local spot for open greenspace, and the George Wythe Pool has been helping residents cool down during the summer for years. War Memorial Stadium is a great place to spend time during the weekend, as it serves as the home of the minor league’s Peninsula Pilots baseball team. Those looking to learn more about the area’s history can do so at the Hampton History Museum, and space explorers of all ages can learn about just that at the Virginia Air & Space Museum.
Groceries and Philly cheesesteaks
For grocery needs, residents can head to Kecoughtan Road’s Food Lion. Those looking to grab a bite on the go should make their way to Chesterfield Road’s Philly Station, a charming walk-up service spot that dishes out Philly cheesesteaks. And for after-work meetups, the White Oak Lodge makes a great spot for a drink and a game of pool with friends.
Annual Easter Egg Hunt
“This is really a community of friends and family,” says Oskarsson. “You’ve got great community events and a real sense of spirit around here.” Robinson Park serves as the home of both the annual Easter Egg Hunt and 4th of July Parade, both put on by the Olde Wythe Neighborhood Association.
Armstrong Elementary School for the Arts
Students in Wythe can apply to begin their education at Armstrong Elementary School for the Arts, which allows the creatively inclined study dance, music and visual arts. After fifth grade, students move on to C. Alton Lindsay Middle School and finish up at Hampton High. According to Niche, these three schools earned grades of A-minus, B-minus, and B-minus, respectively.
Get to Newport News, Hampton, or Fort Monroe quickly
“One of the best things about Wythe is the proximity to Newport News, downtown Hampton, and Fort Monroe,” says Oskarsson. “You’re centrally located and getting around the whole area is really easy.” At just over 2 miles from downtown, residents have their choice of getting around — with walking, public transit, and driving all viable options.
