El Camino Village surrounding 53-acre Alondra Park

El Camino Village, the community surrounding Alondra Park is well connected. Sidewalks and the Laguna Dominguez Trail make it easy to walk or bike to commercial corridors or El Camino College, while nearby interstates link to adjacent cities. “What I’ve always loved about this area is that it’s very friendly and has a real community feel. It’s one of those neighborhoods where you tend to know your neighbors; everyone is out walking their kids to school or walking their dogs,” says Keith Kyle, Realtor with Vista Sotheby’s International Realty, who’s been selling homes in the area since 2005. Its quiet, suburban feel is partly due to its protected layout. “I don’t know who designed the pocket, but there’s only one or two entrances on a few sides, so it doesn’t lend itself to through traffic,” says Kevin Da Silva, Realtor with Douglas Elliman of California, Inc. since 2018. “People aren’t going to be driving through there to beat out traffic.” The neighborhood is still one of eight unincorporated communities in southwest Los Angeles County; however, a 2024 South Bay Area Plan is exploring rezoning for expanded housing and public services.

Golf at Alondra Park, connect to Bodger Park via Laguna Dominguez Trail

The 53-acre Alondra Community Regional Park is the largest park near the coastal cities of Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach — all within around a 5-mile drive. Ample recreation options include a splash park, public 18-hole golf course, skate park and a paved pathway around a small fishing lake with a central island for picnics. “I work for American Golf, and we took over the Alondra Golf Course property in 2023, so we’re doing a lot to revamp it,” says Tyler Kawasaki, manager for Alondra Golf Course. “We’re open 5 days a week, except Mondays and Thursdays, and our café has a bar, so we have cocktails, burgers and dogs, and we also do breakfast omelets and pancakes. Right now, we’re focusing on redoing the irrigation system for more consistent application.” The roughly 3-mile Laguna Dominguez Trail connects Alondra Park with the playground and community garden at 12-acre Bodger Park to the north.

Midcentury single-family homes under or near $1 million

“It’s a lot like South Torrance, with a lot of the homes built in the ‘50s and ‘60s with a 2-car driveway that bends into the garage, and the bulk of the home is at the back of the property,” Da Silva explains. “And the reality is only so many people can afford to live in Torrance, so El Camino Village is similar in its wide, tree-lined streets and an elementary school that’s an 8 out of 10. It’s also centrally located because depending on which corner you live in, you’re 5 minutes from the 405, 105 and 110 freeways.” One of the neighborhood’s most coveted streets is Cordary Avenue, where rows of elegant old-growth Italian stone pine trees weave a quilted canopy above the asphalt. “Owners on this street love the unique look and feel — it’s unlike anything in the South Bay, and it’s even inhabited by a family of hawks,” Kyle notes. Residents enjoy the shade here for sipping morning coffee on small front porches. Pricing for single-family homes varies from around $900,000 for ranch styles to $1.25 million for completely remodeled two-stories.

Culinary Careers Academy at Leuzinger High School

Most public school kids start at Mark Twain Elementary School in the heart of the neighborhood, given a B on Niche. Will Rogers Middle also gets a B, and Leuzinger High earns a B-plus. Leuzinger features a student-led Leu’s Café & Catering as part of its popular Leuzinger’s Culinary Careers Academy. Post-secondary education can start close to home, right next to Alondra Park, at El Camino College. In 2022, El Camino was ranked by Hispanic Outlook on Education Magazine among the top 50 two-year colleges nationwide for granting the most degrees to Hispanic students.

International cuisine on Crenshaw Boulevard

Most of the shopping, dining and entertainment happens along Crenshaw Boulevard. La Villa Mexican Restaurant has been a go-to since the 1960s, and unique pies at Gigi’s Pizza include the “Jalapestroni” made with fresh jalapenos, pesto and toasted pepperoni. “I used to live on the other side of El Camino,” says Da Silva, “and now there’s a complete food truck scene on Crenshaw. You have your traditional taco carts, but now you can have Salvadorian, Venezuelan and even Asian food.” Locals catch movies at the old-school, single-screen Gardena Cinema and stock up for home cooking at Superior Grocers.

Less than 10 miles to Los Angeles International Airport

Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority offers Metro bus stops along Crenshaw and Manhattan Beach boulevards and Marine Avenue for transit to El Camino College or all the way to the Los Angeles International Airport. Says Da Silva, “The Metro Pink Rail is expanding, so you’ll be able to take public transit to Redondo Beach, Hollywood, Galleria Mall, a Clippers game at the new Intuit Dome or a World Cup game at SoFi Stadium.” Residents can drive 8 miles west to LAX airport in about 20 or 30 minutes.

Annual Ho’olaule’a Festival in Alondra Park

Every July, Ho’olaule’a draws nearly 20,000 to Alondra Park. Not only is this the largest Hawaiian festival in Southern California, it’s been held in Alondra Park since 1981. Festival-goers participate in Polynesian-inspired crafts and games while savoring Polynesian cuisine, shaved ice and live music.
