On the river, Henderson South Side offers quiet near the downtown

Henderson South Side is a residential area that branches off Henderson’s downtown on the bank of the Ohio River, about 12 miles from Evansville. “We are a classic river town, but we’re not stuck in the past. We’ve kept the history and charm, but are very forward-thinking, and we’re able to combine the charm with new ideas,” says Abby Dixon, executive director at Henderson Tourist Commission, regarding the greater city of Henderson to which this area is tied. “There’s a great mix of folks born and raised here that never left and carry on traditions, then transplants like me.” Henderson South Side embodies the blend of old and new, with century-old architecture, innovative local restaurants and well-maintained parks.

A mix of old and new homes from the riverfront to downtown

Before the 1950s, Minimal Traditional homes and cottages, some with steep-pitched roofs, were built near the water and downtown. These older homes are priced between about $20,000 and $210,000. Many New Traditional and ranch-style homes were added to the landscape after 1950. They share a similar price range of nearly $160,000 to $340,000. Apartment communities include Cottages of Henderson, which has a communal dog park.

Dining variety from Green Street to downtown with local shops

Green Street has many local dining options, including Cancun Mexican Restaurant and Yum Yum Chinese Restaurant. Sureway Supermarkets is also on the street. Additional restaurants, boutiques and hobby stores are downtown near Main Street. On Deck Riverside Bar & Grill has wall-to-wall windows and outdoor seating with views of the Ohio River. “Simon’s Shoes is over 100 years old. It’s one of those old school shoe stores, where you walk in and someone measures you — that type of concierge service you don’t see anymore,” Dixon says.

School transfer opportunities in Henderson County and career programs

Henderson County Schools district serves the area and offers inter- and intra-district transfers. Some students may enroll at Jefferson Elementary School, which earns a B grade from Niche and feeds into the A-graded South Middle School. Henderson County High School is the district’s only high school and receives a B-plus. It offers career and technical education program pathways varying from marketing to criminal law.

Playgrounds and athletic facilities inland and on the Ohio River

Newman Park features softball and soccer fields, playground equipment and an asphalt loop trail that links with the over 2-mile Canoe Creek Nature Trail. Dos Hosbach Tennis Complex and Audubon Mill Park, which includes a boat ramp, are on the riverfront downtown. Sunset Park is also on the water. “It has a great playground, but what's unique is that the CSX railroad bridge runs along the edge of the park and has a train that passes the bridge [many] times a day. It’s special whenever a train goes by; they honk the horn for the kids,” Dixon says.

Highway drives into Evansville and a local industrial park

U.S. Highway 41 — locally known as “Green Street” — runs through the area, connecting it to downtown Henderson in about 2 miles. The highway also ties Henderson South Side to Evansville and Evansville Regional Airport, nearly 17 miles away. The airport has non-stop flights to hub cities, including Atlanta and Chicago. An industrial park in the neighborhood’s southern region includes manufacturing and utility companies. Railroad tracks lie across this highly commercial area, and trains carrying cargo frequently pass through. As a result, noise and traffic at train crossings may impact the region.
