Rural life in the Las Vegas Valley
Rural life in Las Vegas might seem farfetched, but River Mountain delivers just that, trading the slots for scenic trails and the neon lights for nature. At the base of the River Mountains in the Las Vegas Valley, this rustic neighborhood is surrounded by trails and outdoor fun with an active community passionate about exploring and preserving its surroundings. Its location in the mountains, separating Henderson from Lake Mead, offers residents a peaceful refuge away from the noise and congestion of the city. While an active outdoor lifestyle appeals to newcomers and longtime locals, River Mountain is only a short drive from the Vegas Strip, historic Boulder City and the vibrant shopping district in Downtown Henderson. “It’s a world away from the typical Vegas that people tend to think of,” says Shelly Kopinski, Director of Programs for Get Outdoors Nevada and resident for over 25 years. “Hiking and biking are the norm every weekend, and with so many things to do outside that you can easily get to, I think most people don’t even miss that.”

Miles of trails in the River Mountains
Residents can access a world of outdoor adventures within steps of their front doors. The 34-mile River Mountains Loop Trail, with trailheads right within the neighborhood, winds through the mountain range and connects Lake Mead National Recreation Area, the Hoover Dam and the rest of the valley. “This did so much for the community when it was developed and opened,” says Kopinski. “It brought it to life. I’m out there all the time with my family, and there’s always people out there and wildlife to see.”
This trail, completed in 2012, was an effort started in 1996 by several local citizens and agencies. By 1997, a plan officially took shape with the help of the National Park Service-Lake Mead, the Bureau of Land Management, the City of Henderson, Lake Las Vegas Resort and 26 other local, federal, regional and corporate partners to launch the River Mountain Trail Partnership. “It was a long process for so many people fighting for this, and now I can't imagine this neighborhood without it and what it does for tourism and locals,” Kopinski says. Not only is it popular with hikers, cyclists, pet owners and equestrians for its paved and natural paths, but also wildlife like mountain lions, bobcats and bighorn sheep. The sheep are a frequent companion on the trail as the River Mountains are home to one of the largest bighorn sheep populations in the state. The southern and northern ends of the trail connect hikers and cyclists to other surrounding trails in Henderson, including those in Lake Mead, the Burkholder Trail and the Wetlands Trail Connector. The trail also provides campsites for those who want to extend their outdoor adventure.
The neighborhood’s 170-acre Equestrian Park South will also appeal to horseback riders and pet owners. It offers an equestrian arena, a 2-mile dirt path, an open grass area, a paved trail, parking for horse trailers and a dog park. The park has three adjoining loops connecting to the Equestrian Trailhead and Equestrian Park North, which also offers an arena and horse-holding pen. Kids and sports enthusiasts will enjoy the 9-acre River Mountain Park, which boasts basketball, tennis and volleyball courts, along with a playground and picnic area. In the warmer months, residents can take a 10-mile trip north to Lake Las Vegas. The artificial lake offers an inflatable waterpark, flyboarding and boating.

Most homes were built in the mid-1990s and range from $290,000 to $800,000. Newcomers can expect three-bedroom, 1,500-square-foot Spanish-inspired homes and ranch-style properties in the lower price range and five-bedroom, 5,000-square-foot homes on spacious lots on the higher end. Condos range from $223,00 for a two-bedroom to $245,000 for a three-bedroom.

Most shopping and dining options are along State Route 582, which runs along the neighborhood’s western edge. Hometown Country Kitchen in the Henderson Shopping Village serves up comfort classics like chocolate chip pancakes, patty melts and homemade meatloaf. The shopping center also offers Sunset Pizzeria and covers most other shopping needs, offering Smith’s Food & Drug, Dollar Tree, a gas station and a bank. Cinemark Cinedome Henderson is on the other side of the highway, where residents can catch the latest flick, or Club Fortune is another nearby option for those who crave the typical Vegas Strip experience but loathe the tourist crowds. The casino offers slots, video poker, a sportsbook and a cafe. Railroad Pass has also been catering to the local thrill-seekers since 1931. The casino and hotel boast a steakhouse, a sportsbook, a lounge and a 24-hour museum highlighting the local mining history with antique slot machines. “For people that are into gaming and a fun nightlife experience, it’s nice to have that close by,” she says. History buffs can enjoy River Mountain’s Clark County Museum for a deeper dive into the area's past. The 30-acre site offers a variety of historic homes and buildings depicting Nevada life in different decades, as well as a ghost town and a mining exhibit.

A community uniting over the outdoors
The River Mountain Loop Trail doesn’t just draw residents into the outdoors; it is a public-private partnership between the city and Gets Outdoors Nevada, collaborating to educate and bring the community together. The non-profit organization hosts regular night bike rides, picnics in Equestrian Trail Park South, annual River Mountain Trail cleanups and triathlons. “We try to do as much as we can to keep the trail clean and keep people involved with what we’re doing,” Kopinski says. “We want people to get outside and have fun doing whatever they’re into, so we try to plan things that families, kids, those new to the area and everyone in between can do and enjoy.”
