Easy urban access with a distinct personality
Located in the northeastern corner of the Chattanooga area, Valleybrook maintains its own distinct vibe from the rest of the city — even though it’s only a few miles from downtown. “The area is kind of its own secluded spot,” says Evan Barron, a Realtor with eXp Realty. “It gives off a more private and suburban feel.” Along with downtown proximity and space to stretch out, Valleybrook also enjoys tons of outdoor recreation, with parks, lakes, nature preserves and a golf course. The Hixson Community Center provides a sense of togetherness and fun, providing events and special programs catering to the large senior population of Valleybrook. Residents also don’t have to go far for shopping or a bite to eat, as the Northgate Mall is right within the neighborhood.

Classic styles, secluded charm
Branching off State Route 153, neighborhood streets amble and curve, breaking up sightlines and creating shorter stretches of homes side by side. Lots vary in size, up to an acre. Porches are common. More established houses in Valleybrook consist of single-family ranch-style homes, split-levels and Colonial Revivals. Newer homes are a mixture of modern contemporary and Craftsman builds. Homes sell for $300,000 to $550,000, with houses on larger lots and closer to the golf course leaning toward the higher end of the range.

Greenery and golf in Valleybrook
Those looking to appreciate nature don’t have to travel far— surrounded by parks and close to Chickamauga Lake, there are plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation in Valleybrook. The Chickamauga Creek Conservancy offers hiking, canoeing, sports courts and a dog park within its 7,000 acres. The Valleybrook Golf Course is a historic former stop on the PGA Tour, with an event center and views overlooking the cityscape of Chattanooga. There are also several neighborhood playgrounds, like Vandergriff Park and Hixson Park. For fun indoors, the Hixson Community Center offers a game room, computer lab, library and gym where visitors can participate in various open-play sports and take classes free of charge. “Most rec centers are geared more towards kids, but we’re more of a senior population out this way,” says Hixson Community Center Manager Kevin McGowan, referring to a 65-and-older population more prevalent than the national average. “We have senior basketball, and a lot of the guys that play are in their 80’s. We also have a summer camp for seniors- last year, we took them to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens.” Events such as the Tennessee Festival of Vendors, held at the community center, offer patrons the opportunity to shop for artisan goods made by locals. With all that goes on here, improvements are still being made for the center. “We are in the process of renovating the auditorium. Once that’s done, we’ll be able to do plays and musicals,” says McGowan.

From the Northgate Mall to family-owned restaurants
Valleybrook, though mostly residential, is home to the Northgate Mall, located at the southern tip of the neighborhood. This indoor mall features chain restaurants, big box stores and a few stand-alone spots like the aptly named vinyl shop, For The Record. BiBa’s Italian is a family-owned restaurant serving classic Italian food. Spanglish Modern Mexican is known for its authentic Mexican cuisine with a contemporary twist. The atmosphere reflects this fusion style, with warm, dimly lit chandeliers and rustic touches paired with vibrant graffiti-style murals.

The Hamilton County School District
The Hamilton County School District serves the residents of Valleybrook. Students can attend Hixson Elementary School, Hixson Middle School and Hixson High School, all of which scored a B on Niche. Hixson High offers a program called Pathways, which provides dual credit, advanced placement courses and certification opportunities for three different fields: the Coca-Cola Business Pathway, CHI Memorial Pathway of Healthcare and Pathway of Ag Sciences & Natural Resources.
Hixson Middle School welcomes students in grades 6-8.

Convenient access to interstate and Downtown Chattanooga
Thanks to its proximity to the urban areas of Chattanooga, Valleybrook allows for quick commuting and easy access to U.S. Route 27 and State Route 153. The Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) bus system serves several stops along Hixson Pike and at the Northgate Mall. The Chattanooga Airport is about 9 miles south.
High flood risk
Due to its proximity to North Chickamauga Creek, which runs through the neighborhood on its way to the Tennessee River, Valleybrook is at risk of occasional flooding.
