Clear Lake
Development touched down in 1960s
Residential construction sprouted here in the 1960s in response to NASA’s development of what became the Johnson Space Center. Thus, many houses in this area date back to the 1960s and the 1970s. But there are also homes in the community built across every decade since. That creates an eclectic mix of well-kept ranch-style, colonial and new traditional homes. “I think Clear Lake is mostly developed, but it is one of the highest sought-after cities in our area,” says Woodward, who has been in the real estate industry since 2006. Houses in Clear Lake are spacious, though on par with the Houston-wide average, often somewhere around 2,412 square feet. Front and back lawn room is standard, part of lots that usually stretch around one-fifth of an acre. Some condos and townhomes supplement the single-family homes here and most often sell for prices in the $100,000s and $200,000s. Clear Lake’s single-family properties come with price tags that start in the $100,000s as well, though numbers can climb over $900,000 or more for modern homes pushing 4,000 or 5,000 square feet.Schools fly high
Education is another one of the draws to this area — the region’s Clear Creek Independent School District boasts an A overall rating on Niche. All of the system’s elementary, middle and high schools have at least a B rating on Niche. A possible path for students in this community is to start at the A-rated Clear Lake City Elementary, whose curriculum includes robotics instruction. Then, they can move on to the A-minus-rated Clear Lake Intermediate, which offers athletic programs ranging from football to golf. The area’s A-plus-rated Clear Lake High has dozens of student groups, including aerospace and sailing clubs. There are higher education opportunities in town as well, thanks to the University of Houston-Clear Lake, whose computer science program, College of Business and College of Human Sciences and Humanities are popular.
Fresh air is easy to find
This community’s suburban sprawl leaves room for plenty of outdoor fun, thanks partly to its proximity to the water — “the access to boating and the water activities and the Kemah Boardwalk,” Woodward says. The area’s 59-acre Clear Lake Park, for example, includes a fishing pier and a boat launch. Kemah Boardwalk, just a few miles away, is like a year-round carnival, with rides including a Ferris wheel, several restaurants and an aquarium.Locals have the 200-acre Exploration Green by the Johnson Space Center, farther inland. This expanse features almost 6 miles of paved trails, multiple athletic fields and plenty of open grassy space perfect for a picnic. The 111-acre Sylvan Rodriguez Park to the north has trails of its own, plus a playground with a rocket theme appropriate for the area.
Commercial amenities come easy
Clear Lake is dotted with restaurants, grocery stores and other conveniences, including multiple H-E-B locations, a couple of Krogers and an ALDI. Baybrook Mall is nearby as well, stretching almost 1.5 million square feet and filled with more than 170 stores. Popular eateries in the area include Abe’s Cajun Market, a restaurant serving up Louisiana-style fare. Rotating specials include chicken and sausage jambalaya and beef tips over rice, and the cornbread is a hit with any dish. Tommy's Seafood Restaurant & Oyster Bar is another local institution, which dates back to 1995. The grilled oysters are a signature at Tommy’s.Also, besides grabbing a bite to eat or heading out to the lake, Space Center Houston by the Johnson Space Center is another way to spend free time. Considered one of the city’s leading attractions, Space Center Houston is a 250,000-square-foot education center full of hundreds of artifacts, including a spacesuit collection. The center also hosts a range of events, including overnight camping gatherings that include access to STEM activities, plus dinner and breakfast.
Interstate 45 is a convenient artery
Interstate 45 runs right by the western side of Clear Lake, offering residents quick access to Downtown Houston, just over 20 miles to the north. This area also has multiple stops in the city’s METRO bus system, which includes more than 100 routes.Community comes together in multiple ways
Residents can find a multitude of events and programming to take part in over the course of the year, whether at Space Center Houston or elsewhere. There’s a bird-watching gathering at Exploration Green on the second Tuesday of each month, for instance. Also, nearby Kemah Boardwalk is home to an annual Fourth of July celebration with live music and fireworks. Kemah has also, for more than 60 years, hosted the Christmas Boat Lane Parade, featuring dozens of decorated boats.
