Backyards often have inground pools and covered patios.Memorial High School has some star alums
Students in the area can attend Rummel Creek Elementary School, which receives an A Niche grade. Memorial Middle School is another high-achieving school earning an A and being Niche's 18th best public middle school in Harris County. Stratford High School holds an overall Niche grade of A.A big park just across the street
George Bush Park is a colossal park just 6 miles from Memorial. Visitors enjoy trails, boardwalks, dog parks, fishing and birdwatching. For those looking for a closer nature experience, residents can visit Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary. The sanctuary offers walking trails, educational programs and ample birdwatching. Every week, residents may attend Friday Night Hikes, a 1.5-mile trail network in the park that includes flat, accessible trails as well as steeper inclined trails and stairways. The Wintering Wildlife Camp is a venue for field trips, allowing kids to explore the outdoors and participate in nature crafts and games during winter. The Memorial West Community Club offers tennis courts, a lap pool and a clubhouse open to the public for a fee. Residents can attend the club’s ever-popular Nottingham Grill ‘n Chills on Friday afternoons.Shopping in the Centre and eating at the Bistro
While downtown Houston is 14 miles away, Memorial residents can drive to CityCentre, a shopping hub across the Sam Houston Tollway. “The CityCentre has been a huge boost to the neighborhood,” says Eric Herpin, president of the locally run Nottingham Civic Association. “All the shopping and restaurants and theaters there make it a fun gathering spot.” The nearby Randalls is a go-to for groceries and other essentials, while Tres Market Foods is a popular spot for grab-and-go items. Bistro 555 features a menu of fabulous French dishes such as filet de vivaneau au four a bois and les modules du Rabelais paired with wines from an extensive menu.A simple drive to Houston via the freeway
“I’d have to say that the area’s proximity to downtown is one of the main draws for homebuyers. You can be away from the noise but close to the action at the same time,” says Herpin. It’s no wonder as to why – Houston is just a 14-mile drive east from Memorial via Katy Freeway in the neighborhood’s north. Besides Katy Freeway, North Wilcrest Drive and North Kirkwood Road are the two main thoroughfares from which all of Memorial’s residential streets stem.Hanging out in the music box
The Music Box Theater is a popular local venue that hosts live music, sketch comedy and cabaret performances. Audiences come to the theater to enjoy its in-house-written and produced comedies centered around different musical themes. Over in Memorial City across Sam Houston Tollway, residents can celebrate the holidays during the Memorial City Shines Bright Event. Festivities include Christmas lighting, a reindeer parade, and gift-giving throughout the day.
