Uptown-Galleria District
A retail therapy hotbed
The nucleus of this area is right in the name — The Galleria is not only the largest mall in the state but also the seventh-largest in the country. This behemoth spans 2.4 million square feet, with more than 400 stores and some five dozen eateries. One of the mall’s signature features is its 20,000-square-foot ice rink, open year-round. There are even a couple of attached hotels. But in terms of shopping, The Galleria’s main attraction, visitors have choices that span a range of budgets, everything from Gucci and Louis Vuitton to Forever 21 and H&M. Restaurants range from fast casual, like Chipotle, to high-end, like The Oceanaire Seafood Room. The Galleria isn’t the only retail haven here, either. Shoppers can also head about a mile north to Uptown Park, an outdoor center with three dozen restaurants and shops. “Right now, there’s a new one called Lombardi’s, that’s where a lot of people go,” says local Realtor Kate Wiktoria Myhan of JPAR - The Sears Group. Lombardi Cucina Italiana opened in Uptown Park in late 2023 and is known in part for its Wagyu meatballs. And those who work at the numerous companies in the Uptown-Galleria District can stop by the area’s H-E-B, Kroger, Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s on the way home to grab groceries for a home-cooked meal.Homes span the gamut but share a cache
This is a busy area, says Myhan, who has been in real estate here for several years. But those who don’t mind living close to the action have a host of options. Homes in this area date back to the 1950s, but Myhan says there is plenty of new development. The Uptown-Galleria District features a mix of traditional single-family homes and townhomes bordering sidewalk-lined streets, plus sleek high-rise condos. The common denominator in this area seems to be tidy, well-kept properties. “Uptown, it’s luxury,” Myhan says. “It’s mostly singles or empty nesters.” Price tags here start in the low $100,000s for a condo or townhome under 1,000 square feet and top out at multiple millions for some of the single-family houses of around 5,000 square feet or more.Live entertainment is easy to find
Shopping isn’t the only way to enjoy free time in Uptown-Galleria District. This area also offers the 35,000-square-foot, 450-plus-seat Jeannette & L.M. George Theater, home to the A.D. Players theater company. The A.D. Players stage a full complement of shows at George Theater — recent productions have included “Kingdom Undone” and “Driving Miss Daisy,” and each show runs for at least a week.Unwind in Waterfall Park
The Galleria mall stands adjacent to the Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park, which features a 64-foot-tall sculptural fountain that unloads a majestic stream of water. The Waterwall’s mist is a nice way to cool down on a warm day. The park also features an expansive lawn and tree-shaded benches. The largest urban park in the state lies just beyond the district, the 1,500-acre Memorial Park. Memorial Park is ideal for those who like to get active, with 30 miles of trails, a tennis center, a golf course and more.Transportation assets abound
Though this area contains just about every amenity, commuters will appreciate the district’s proximity to Interstates 10, 610 and 69. People can use I-69, for example, to reach Downtown Houston in a trip of just about 9 miles. The Uptown-Galleria District is well covered by Houston’s METRO bus system, too, which includes more than 100 routes in total.Schools come close by
This area is served by the Houston Independent School District, a system that earns a B from Niche. And residents are minutes from multiple campuses. A possible path is to start at The School at St. George Place for prekindergarten through fifth grade, which has a B rating and is known for offering the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. Students can move on to the B-rated Tanglewood Middle, where they can progress into the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. Margaret Long Wisdom High, a C-rated school, is next, and has a career and technical education department with programs in disciplines ranging from business management to engineering.
