An amenity-filled residential pocket of Huntington
In Fairfield, an assortment of homes rest on either side of Hal Greer Boulevard. Named after the first Black athlete to receive a scholarship from the city’s Marshall University, who went on to an illustrious NBA career, Hal Greer Boulevard is lined with all sorts of businesses and Cabell Huntington Hospital, one of the area’s major medical centers. The thoroughfare places residents conveniently close to amenities. “The Fairfield neighborhood is much more mixed-use — you’ve got commercial, and you’ve got the large hospital. Then you have single-family home dwellings as well,” says Whitney Hood-Gesner, a local Realtor with Hood Realty Company.

Classic homes with character
Fairfield features a mix of single- and multifamily residences, but all were built from the early-to-mid 20th century and most have Craftsman or colonial styling. Many of the neighborhood’s options have multistory floor plans, that stretch 1,358 square feet on average. These houses were built closely together, but properties still come with a good bit of backyard space on compact lots. Homes that need work sell for $20,000 to $75,000, while those in better condition go for $80,000 to $300,000.
Fairfield residents take pride in their homes and enjoy taking care of them, as many feature manicured lots.

Tudor’s is known for its college-themed breakfast sandwiches
Among the amenities on Hal Greer Boulevard is a location of the West Virginia-based chain Tudor's Biscuit World. “That is a very, very, very popular breakfast place,” Hood-Gesner says. Breakfast biscuits are named after nearby college mascots, including the “Thundering Herd” and “Mountaineer.” Tudor’s also has lunch and dinner menus with items from pork barbecue sandwiches to country-fried steak. Locals can travel farther south on Hal Greer Boulevard for more options, including Frostop Drive-In, a nostalgic spot known in large part for its root beer. People here can pick up quick essentials at the Walgreens on Hal Greer or head to the Kroger 2 miles north on Fifth Avenue.
