A rapidly changing, long-time Indy neighborhood
Southdale is one of Indianapolis’ oldest settlements. Perhaps the only evidence of this is found in the neighborhood’s Round Hill Cemetery, where gravesites date back to 1831 -- just 10 years after Indianapolis was established. The rest of Southdale continues to transform with the times – particularly in the past decade. Along with nearby Southport, this neighborhood has experienced an influx of immigrants from Burma’s Chin ethnic group since 2012. So, in some regards, this mostly residential area of mid-century homes feels like one of Indy’s newest neighborhoods.

Ideal for commuting in any direction
The ability to reach downtown Indianapolis with relative ease is part of Southdale’s appeal – Meridian Street is a straight shot for the 6-mile trip. “Geographically, it is appealing to a lot of service workers,” says real estate broker Rollin Jackson, who has done business in Indy since 1960. And thanks to Interstate 465, workers would have the same commute time to the Amazon Distribution Center in south suburban Greenwood or traveling east to work at or near Indianapolis International Airport. There is just one bus route in the neighborhood, running along U.S. Route 31.

A world of dining options
Southdale shopping and dining comes in a variety of worldwide flavors. The increasing Chin presence is seen in locations like Vum Family Grocery and Zing Asian Grocery, which also features the attached Sian Restaurant. Other Southdale staples include El Jalapeno Mexican, 5-Star Indian Cuisine and Thai Recipes Restaurant. And things don’t get more quintessentially Hoosier than at The Corner Bar, which has outdoor seating and nightly live music. There are also Kroger locations to the north and south of the neighborhood.

Churches reflect growing Chin population
Sunday morning traffic is likely busier in Southdale than some Indianapolis neighborhoods. Faith is important to many Southdale residents, with more than a half-dozen churches in the neighborhood and many others within a short driving distance. That includes Bethany Lutheran, which is the meeting place for the Southdale Neighborhood Association. There are also three churches serving Chin residents: Chin Christian Church, Falam Christian Church and Chin Evangelical Baptist Church. The more than 22,000 Chin residents in south Indianapolis fled their native Burma due to religious persecution and were granted refugee status.

Creeks create flood concerns
Like many other Indianapolis neighborhoods, creeks crisscross through Southdale, adding potential flood risks in areas closest to the creeks. Homes near I-465 and U.S. 31 will also contend with traffic noise.
