New amenities in an older South Kansas City neighborhood
Located in South Kansas City, suburban Red Bridge South is seeing a renaissance. The neighborhood gets its name from a historic red bridge in nearby Minor Park, originally built in 1859. When a second red bridge was unveiled in 2013, the old red bridge became the Love Locks Bridge, adorned with several thousand locks representing local couples' love and commitment. The newer bridge, though more utilitarian than romantic, marked the start of a transformative wave of investment in Red Bridge South. Residents now enjoy a fully redeveloped shopping center, updated library and brand-new children’s museum all within their neighborhood. Nevertheless, Red Bridge South has maintained relative affordability, as homes tend to be on the older side, often dating back to the 1960s.

Local businesses populate Red Bridge Shopping Center
Though the Red Bridge Shopping Center was opened in 1959, a 2017 renovation brought new businesses and life to the area. “There are a few great restaurants now, where a few years ago it was significantly less busy,” says Michael Reno, a senior real estate consultant with Realty Executives with more than 15 years’ experience. Nearly every shop, restaurant, salon and fitness center is locally owned, and spots like Caleb’s Breakfast & Lunch are always busy with regulars from the surrounding community. Red Bridge’s eclectic array of businesses include Crows Coffee, known for ample seating in a cozy setting, family-owned Euston Hardware and Barrio, a regional Mexican food chain with a softly lit outdoor patio. For groceries, residents head to Cosentino’s Price Chopper or cross the state line to reach Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods.
Patio seating is a wonderful way to spend a few hours while enjoying a nice meal.

Homes with character from the 60s and 70s
Predominantly developed in the 1960s and 1970s, Red Bridge South has ranch-style homes and split-levels with unique accents such as Cape Cod-style dormer windows, sloping Mansard roofs or Tudor stylings. Homes sit fairly close together, with well-maintained front lawns bleeding into one another. Narrow sidewalks typically run along one side of the street, though people here are more inclined to drive. Buyers can expect to find homes with three or four bedrooms, two-car garages and lots around a quarter-acre. Prices typically fall between $280,000 and $500,000 — above the Kansas City median — and sell after an average of 15 days on the market. “It’s a nice place to live that’s still relatively affordable,” says John Kilby, broker with BHG Kansas City Homes and a longtime Kansas City resident. He has seen many young families moving into the neighborhood. “A lot of the homes are moving from one generation to the other.”

The trail network is lauded for having fun and challenging trails for cyclists with varied skill levels. One of the neighborhood’s assets, Kilby says, is its proximity to Overland Park: “You’re close to all the shopping at Overland Park but you don’t have to pay Overland Park prices.” A 3-mile drive delivers shoppers to major retailers such as Macy’s, Sephora and Barnes & Noble at the Town Center Plaza. Downtown Kansas City is just over 16 miles away.
