The deep history just north of The Strip

Known as Historic West Las Vegas or simply Westside, the neighborhood spans 3.5 square miles northwest of the Las Vegas Strip. When segregation kept Black residents from working on or visiting The Strip, they created their own community just west of the iconic boulevard. Centered around Jackson Avenue, the area was popular in the 1940s and 1950s, and frequent guests included Louie Armstrong, Nat King Cole and Sammy Davis Jr. As years passed on and residents moved to different parts of the area, the city has been working to preserve the neighborhood, with one of its most visible steps being a lighted “Welcome to Historic Westside” sign greeting motorists on Highway 95. “It is an older neighborhood that is currently being revitalized,” says Juan Lopez, a realtor with eXp Realty who has served the Las Vegas area for over 9 years. “Many people that I see buying houses in the area like it because it is close to the heart of the city.”

Variety of Vegas roads

The West Las Vegas neighborhood makes transportation easy, with M.L.K. Boulevard splitting the neighborhood in half and providing easy access to the downtown Las Vegas area. Additionally, bus lines dot the entire community for those who do not want to drive. Interstate 15 and Route 95, as well as Rancho Drive, border the neighborhood's eastern, southern and western ends, respectively, and provide locals quick access to the Clark County area for both trips and daily commutes. Due to the number of popular roads both in and around the neighborhood, “cars are a common choice,” Lopez says. Harry Reid International Airport lies 10 miles to the south for trips outside of Nevada.

Grits to grills in Nevada

Gritz Café is a local hotspot in the area and has been around since 2008 as a Soul Food staple in the city. It has repeatedly been voted Las Vegas’ Best Soul Food Restaurant by the Las Vegas Review Journal and is especially popular for both chicken and waffles and shrimp and grits. For a night out, locals also head to West Side Oasis, one of the newest black-owned bars in Las Vegas and features a bar and restaurant with hot and fresh pizzas alongside DJ nights and open mic nights. Mario's WestSide Market in the center of the neighborhood and the Walmart by Rancho Drive are two nearby grocery options.

Nevada’s stucco ranch-style homes

West Las Vegas comprises small 1950s to 1970s ranch-style homes, with many sporting a Spanish-revival façade with earthy stucco exteriors and tiled roofs. While some homes in the area need some TLC, others are deceptively modest on the outside but boast stainless steel appliances, luxury vinyl flooring and other appealing updates. Yards generally reflect minimal desert landscaping with local plants and rock arrangements. Many lots are large enough for pools and RV parking, and these properties command higher prices than the normal range in the neighborhood of around $300,000 to $500,000. “Most people that buy homes in this area are getting their first home or an entry-level home,” Lopez says.

West Las Vegas’ soil and hospitals

The neighborhood was built over geologic faults and an aquifer, and decades of pumping water underground has affected the soil. Faults were reactivated in the neighborhood, causing fissures in the ground, which led to the cracking and breaking of home foundations and gas and water lines. Valley Hospital Medical Center is 2 miles south of the neighborhood for medical care.
