Elwood offers charm in 'the heart of Huntington'
Located near the center of the town of Huntington, Elwood is easy to overlook for those who don’t know it’s there. Less than 5 square miles, the mostly residential neighborhood abuts larger neighborhoods with more recognizable names, like East Northport, Commack and Huntington. Its charm and location, though, have earned Elwood its motto: “The heart of Huntington.” According to Valerie LaBianca, a licensed real estate salesperson at Douglas Elliman who grew up in Elwood and has 20 years of real estate experience here, many people who grew up here have chosen to stay, “so the roots go deep.” But even newcomers to Elwood find a welcoming community. “It’s very much that type of development where you do get to know your neighbors and you ask your neighbor for help,” LaBianca says. “You’re helping each other, whether you ran out of duct tape or you need a cup of sugar, anything like that.” And when residents want more exciting shopping, restaurants or entertainment, they only have to drive a few miles in nearly any direction.

Older homes starting around $600,000
Many homes in Elwood were built during a building boom that lasted from the 1950s to the 1970s. As a result, LaBianca says, Cape Cods, hi-ranches and ranch-style homes are most common here, though some have undergone renovations or additions that changed their original style. There are also some recently built new traditionals. Most homes cost between $600,000 and $950,000 and sit on a quarter of an acre to half an acre. A few new or updated homes on one or more acres can climb to $1.6 million. The Seasons at Elwood is a 55-plus community with condos and townhouses that start at around $850,000 and can climb to over $1 million. The CAP Index crime score is 2 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.

Highly rated Elwood schools
The Elwood Union Free School District has an A-plus from Niche. Children attend Harley Avenue Primary School from kindergarten through second grade and James H. Boyd Intermediate School from third through fifth grade. Both schools earn A ratings, and in 2022, a third-grade teacher from the intermediate school was named a Master Teacher by New York State and the governor’s office. The prestigious honor is awarded to public school instructors who demonstrate excellence in teaching science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Once they graduate fifth grade, students move to Elwood Middle School and Elwood John H. Glenn High School, which also both earn A ratings. Partnerships with St. John’s University, Suffolk Community College and Stony Brook University give students at the high school the chance to take college-level courses. A tiny southwestern sliver of Elwood is instead served by the South Huntington Union Free School District, which Niche gives an A. “People want to live here because of the schools and the school districts,” says Rob Bianco, the office manager at Island Advantage Realty.
Elwood Middle School sits on the same campus as Elwood John Glenn High School.
Elwood John Glenn High School is a highly regarded school serving students is grades 9-12.

Playing and cooling off in Elwood Park
Right at the heart of the neighborhood, Elwood Park is a focal point for many. “The park has really changed — Elwood Park is amazing,” LaBianca says. “They have different events at the park. They also made it a water park, and you can rent the pavilion there.” The spray park was added in 2018 and is a major draw during the summer. The park also has a playground, tennis courts and athletic fields where local practices and games are held. When there aren’t games going on, locals often play fetch with their dogs in the field. Hikers head to Berkeley Jackson County Park, which has a well-marked 2-mile trail on hilly, wooded terrain. Elwood is an inland community, but it’s still only a 7-mile drive to Centerport Beach on Northport Bay.

Restaurants and major retailers on Elwood’s edges
Most of Elwood’s restaurants and shops are located at its edges. Chefs of New York is a go-to Italian spot with pasta and pizza, and Changing Times Alehouse is a popular pub where friends meet to catch a game on its TVs over wings and drinks. Fat Boy’s Burrito Co. has burritos, burrito bowls and dessert nachos, and LaBianca says that Nisen Sushi is another popular spot. Elwood’s southeastern corner is where its biggest shopping center is found. There’s a movie theater here alongside T.J. Maxx, Best Buy and several gyms. Stop & Shop is also located in the shopping center, with a Trader Joe’s less than a mile away. Elwood also has a Lidl.

Nearby highways, LIRR stations and hospitals
State Route 25 runs along Elwood’s southern edge, and it takes just a few minutes to hop onto Deer Park Road or the Northern State Parkway from the neighborhood. Elwood doesn’t have a Long Island Rail Road station of its own, but the East Northport and Greenlawn stations are each about 3 miles away. From these stations, commuters reach Manhattan’s Penn Station in about an hour and 25 minutes. Huntington Station is about 5 miles away, but it offers express trains that cut the journey to just over an hour. Huntington Hospital is about 5 miles away and Northport VA Medical Center is just under 7 miles away.
Most Elwood residents use the Huntington LIRR Station to travel into NYC.

Easter egg hunts in the park, entertainment in nearby neighborhoods
Elwood Park hosts little events like an annual Easter egg hunt, but it’s quiet most of the year. Being surrounded by bigger, trendier neighborhoods has its benefits; there are always big events going on nearby, especially in Huntington about 6 miles away.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
