Central Long Island suburb and transit hub
Situated in the heart of Long Island, Ronkonkoma is a neighborhood known for its large lake and relatively affordable homes. The area has long been a transportation hub with the first road designated for automobiles, the Vanderbilt Motor Parkway, running from here to Queens in New York City in the early 1900s. Today, it's both road and rail that get the job done. “A lot of people are drawn to Ronkonkoma just for the mass transit,” says Todd Yovino, a licensed real estate broker and owner of Island Advantage Realty. “For anyone who wants to live centrally on Long Island, being close to a major train line or the highway can save 10 or more hours per week commuting to and from work.”
Ronkonkoma has pleasant waterfront communities surrounding its lake.

An hour and 20 minutes to Midtown Manhattan
Ronkonkoma has direct service to Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan, which takes an hour and 20-minute. This depot serves many central Long Island suburban communities where a large portion of residents commute into the city for work. Many park their cars in the adjoining lot. The station also serves as a transfer point for passengers continuing east along Long Island’s North Shore toward the North Fork. The Long Island Expressway runs through the neighborhood and gets residents into Manhattan within an hour and a half to two hours, depending on traffic.

Suburban Long Island for good value
Home prices in Ronkonkoma are slightly lower than housing costs in adjacent neighborhoods due to its status as a transit hub. A half-acre of land can still be purchased for $145,000. Smaller postwar Ranches and bungalows range from $200,000 to $500,000. Sprawling Hi-Ranches from the early 1900s fetches $600,000. The market tops out at around $700,000 for a renovated, colonial revival originally built around 1950. Comparable properties in nearby Hauppauge sell for close to $1 million. Station Yards Development
Currently under construction, The Station Yards is a new mixed residential and commercial development that will revitalize the area around the station and airport with condos targeting a new crop of residents looking to move out of New York City while still being able to commute in for work. Though providing economic improvement to the neighborhood, such a large-scale project can sometimes be a nuisance when considering the noise and obstruction of roads that come with construction.

The naturally formed freshwater lake is a popular place for swimming in warmer months and was once a destination for affluent New Yorkers. There’s a lifeguard station at the lake’s sandy beach closest to the Lake Ronkonkoma Recreation Center during the summer. There’s also a playground, handball, tennis, and basketball courts. The lake remains a good alternative for residents who don’t want to venture to Long Island’s bay beaches, with one only 11 miles away in Islip. The historic 3,473-acre Connetquot River State Park Preserve is close by and features miles of nature and bridal paths.

I do not see people working out often and I do know of some people who have a bad habit of using hard drugs.

Ronkonkoma in general is a quiet place. For the most part the people there are friendly. For a suburban area it isn't very striking, however, it is full of charm. Lake Ronkonkoma is very pretty especially in the summer. It is very close to a few malls and New York City is just an hour train ride away or an hour drive if there isn't traffic. There are many beaches that are around a 15-30 minute drive away and there is just so much to see.

The people in Ronkonkoma are neighborly and pleasant. There isn't much nigh life and certain areas can be shady at night. There are a multitude of good restaurants within the local area that are at reasonable price. The school system (Connetquot) is very good. As a student I feel safe and connected to my community. Ronkonkoma is a decent community overall.
