Suburban life within commuting distance of New York City
Valley Stream is the first stop in Long Island on the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), making the village a popular choice for city workers who want to come home to the suburbs. The village shares its name with the stream that runs through the neighborhood, feeding into Valley Stream Pond. “It’s a short commute to New York City. It only takes about 30 minutes to get to Penn Station and now that there is a stop at Grand Central Terminal, it’s even shorter,” says Joosoo Kim, a local real estate agent with Charles Rutenberg Realty Inc. Valley Stream also offers top-notch schools, access to state and local parks and a diverse community. “Families fall in love with Valley Stream because it welcomes people from all walks of life with open arms,” Kim says.

Tidy lawns and tree-lined streets
There’s a variety of homes in the village, from 1920s colonial-inspired houses to Cape Cods built in the 1940s and 1950s, as well as newer ranches. “We do not have many co-ops or townhouses compared to other neighborhoods,” Kim says. Prices range from around $630,000 for a three-bedroom home to close to $1 million for a five-bedroom house with multiple bathrooms. Residences often have trim lawns and sit on tree-lined streets. A small sliver in the southwest corner of Valley Stream, close to Motts Creek, has higher home prices, with ranch properties regularly selling for $1.1 million or more.

Greenspace and a swimming complex at Hendrickson Park
Arthur J. Hendrickson Park is at the center of village life, which hosts community events and has a mini golf course and a swimming complex with an interactive kiddie water park and diving and Olympic-sized pools. The 45-acre green space also offers fishing in Valley Stream Pond; basketball, tennis and handball courts; and walking trails that connect to Valley Stream State Park—across the street from Hendrickson Park—for about a 3-mile loop, Kim says. “It’s really beautiful and serene there,” she adds. The state park offers additional picnic space with grills, play areas and courts over its 97 acres.

I have lived in Valley Stream all my life and although I really do love this neighborhood, I can defiantly say over the past few years it has begun to go down. Trees are becoming less and less, the public school have gone down, and the neighborhood is starting to look run down. Valley Stream has so much potential and I really hope in the future it will be able to be like it used to.

Winter tends to be troublesome at times. The amount of snow that falls sometimes can make it very difficult to navigate around the town. When there is a lot of rain, we get flash flood warnings all the time. There is a lot of flooding in the area and when there is a hurricane, the power goes out and it floods damaging homes and cars.
