Echo Park
Events at Echo Park Lake and around the area
Echo Park Lake is the neighborhood’s social hub. Festivals, workshops and social meetups occur on the shady grass of the neighborhood’s namesake park. Century-old Angelus Temple is in the neighborhood, welcoming congregants for services. Nearby Dodger Stadium, one of the oldest baseball parks, has been home to the Los Angeles Dodgers since 1962. So close to the neighborhood it is easy to catch a game. For even more options, Downtown LA — home to iconic museums, music halls and entertainment venues — is just 10 minutes away by car.Neighborhood nightlife and accessible shopping
While the neighborhood's proximity to Dodger Stadium is a plus for local fans, most locals are more interested in the impressive array of top-tier restaurants and bars the baseball crowds support. “It’s got every type of cuisine you can imagine,” Sommers says. “And most of the stuff on Sunset is pretty highly rated. There’s a nice combination of established and up-and-coming restaurants. I don’t know how long it would take to try them all.” Quarter Sheets Pizza serves Detroit-style pies, while LA staple Guisados offers traditional guisados, a braised meat and vegetables dish, on house-made tortillas. There are many local businesses selling clothing, home goods and other specialty items. Vintage shops and galleries make furnishing a home or refreshing a wardrobe easy. Echo Park Market and the neighborhood Vons provide residents with anything they need, only a short walk from their front door.
Sommers says it's a vibrant area with lots to keep locals busy. “Echo Park is known for being a haven for writers and musicians,” she says. “There are clubs that do reggae and heavy metal. It's a very eclectic mix of music that you’ll hear out.” Patrons sip craft beer between rounds of vintage arcade games at Button Mash. Discover new indie bands at iconic local music joint The Echo, or dance the night away at its sister venue, Echoplex.
Unique homes give neighborhood its own look
The neighborhood’s hilly residential streets offer great views under the shade of palm trees. The local housing inventory is varied, with options ranging from 100-year-old bungalows and ranches to multimillion-dollar historic landmarks. Echo Park is mainly built out, but some developers purchase homes to tear down and rebuild on the land. In recent builds, developers work with the natural landscape to maximize views. Newer homes have a distinct three-story split-level layout built into the hillsides.Echo Park is one of Central LA’s more expensive neighborhoods. “A lot of buyers say, ‘If I’m not going to be by the ocean, I want to be in the hills,’” says Sommers. “When it comes to Echo Park, it's a highly desired area for millennials. It's still pricey, but it’s cheaper than Santa Monica and Culver City.” Apart from being a convenient commute to Glendale, Burbank and Downtown, the neighborhood offers great views, great parks and great shopping. Homes start at $450,000 for a small condo and go up to over $2,000,000 for multiunit investment opportunities. Bungalows, one of the most popular house styles in the neighborhood, sell for a median of $1,200,000.
Echo Park Lake and Elysian Park
At 600 acres, neighboring Elysian Park is one of LA’s largest and oldest parks. The park overlaps the neighborhood’s eastern border, so residents have easy access to winding trails for hiking and biking. Dense trees shade the paths, providing shade from the SoCal sun. For some of the best views of the Los Angeles skyline, ascend Angel’s Point in the park. The palm-lined promenade around Echo Park Lake is one of the city’s defining landmarks, famous for its fantastic views of the LA skyline. Trails loop around the lake, but paddle boats are available if visitors want to get closer to the water. In the neighborhood’s southern tip, Hermosa Park was developed by the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority to preserve some of LA’s natural topography and biodiversity. Visitors enjoy trails, picnic space, streams, meadows, oak savannahs, a playground and a FIFA-regulation soccer field.
Los Angeles Unified School District serves neighborhood
Los Angeles Unified School District serves Echo Park. Neighborhood kids start school at Logan Academy of Global Ecology. The school, which earned a C on Niche, educates children from kindergarten through eighth grade. Students complete their education at Belmont Senior High School, which earned a B-minus from Niche. Belmont offers students 12 sports teams, more than 15 social and academic clubs and 10 AP courses. Students are sorted into one of three unique academies to prepare them for a career or education after graduating: Los Angeles Academy of Medical and Public Service, Belmont Multimedia Academy and the School of Science, Art and Green Engineering.Getting around Echo Park on foot, by bus or car
Sommers says the neighborhood’s walkability is a huge draw. With no set residential or retail corridor, shopping and dining are sometimes only as far as a walk across the street. Walk Score designates Echo Park as a “Walker’s Paradise,” scoring 97 out of 100.Getting around by public transit will prove more challenging. LA Department of Transportation circulates DASH busses throughout the city, with some routes stopping in or by Echo Park. Getting around LA by car isn’t too tricky, as highways 101 and 110 intersect on the southern border of the neighborhood. Downtown Los Angeles is a little over 2 minutes away from Echo Park and typically takes 10 minutes to reach. Neighboring Glendale and its many amenities are a short 5 miles away.
For those traveling farther away, LAX is 20 miles south of Echo Park and can be reached in 45 minutes, depending on traffic.
