Poplar Level: Traveled since the 1700s
It’s only 5 miles from downtown Louisville, but the Poplar Level neighborhood contains two of the easiest ways Louisville locals can come face to face with the natural world. One is the Louisville Zoo, home to more than 1,200 animals including polar bears and pygmy hippos. The other is the Louisville Nature Center, which oversees a sprawling, forested nature preserve. Poplar Level’s connection to the natural world is fitting since the neighborhood’s name comes from Poplar Level Road, built in the 1780s and covered with poplar wood boards. Today, Poplar Level Road extends through the west side of the neighborhood, providing quick access to restaurants and stores.
