Mature area bordered by major roads with the oldest active neighborhood association in town
Located on the east side of Madison, the Elvehjem neighborhood is home to about 1,750 households. “Buyers love that this is an established area that is only 15 minutes from downtown and the university,” says Ben Anton, a broker associate with the Lauer Realty Group. Two sizable parks, a neighborhood elementary school and access to major Madison thoroughfares are key features of Elvehjem. Prices here are a bit lower than the Madison average. It is also home to Madison's longest-running active neighborhood association, which was the subject of a 50-year anniversary documentary in 2018.
Neighborhood association plans numerous events and has been operating for over 50 years
The Elvehjem Neighborhood Association hosts several events and has served the area for over 50 years. It’s not an HOA, so there are no mandatory dues, though they do request $20 donations on the website to help pay for event programming. The biggest event is the Fourth of July celebration, which features an early run/walk, followed by a children’s bike parade and food trucks, music and a silent auction. Other events include an Earth Day clean-up, garage sales, holiday celebrations and a community resource fair at Acewood Park.
Major thoroughfares border the neighborhood
Thoroughfares surround Elvehjem. U.S. Highway 51 borders the neighborhood on the west, and Interstate 90 does so on the east. Both connect to Madison’s Beltline Highway, which loops along Madison’s southside and connects to the far westside. Downtown Madison is about 7 miles away. Madison Metro buses run along Buckeye and Cottage Grove roads and through the center of the neighborhood. Elvehjem's quiet streets are good for walking and biking. “It’s a very bikeable neighborhood,” Kane says. UW Health’s East Madison Hospital is 8 miles north. The Dane County Regional Airport is about 7 miles northwest.
Ranch-style homes from the 50s and 60s
Elvehjem's residential streets are calm and quiet, some lined with sidewalks and lush tree growth. Largely ranch-style homes and split-levels, with the rare Colonial Revival sprinkled in, most homes in the neighborhood were built between the 50s and 70s. “It’s all these cute little 50s and 60s ranches,” says Ali Kane, a broker associate with Stark Company Realtors. “It’s ranch country over there.” Recent prices have ranged from $310,000 to $500,000, with most homes falling somewhere in the $300,000s, lower than the overall Madison average. “There’s not much movement in the neighborhood because it’s a great area,” Anton says. "Some of the best values in Elvehjem are going to be grandma houses that are being sold for just the first or second time. The homes may be a bit dated, but they have a lot to offer people willing to put the time in.”
Dual language immersion at Sennett Middle School
Served by the Madison Metropolitan School District, which Niche rates a B-plus. Students can attend Elvehjem Elementary School, which scores a B-plus. Sennett Middle School scores a C-plus and has dual language immersion classes in Spanish and English. La Follette High School earns a B and offers a range of AP classes and competitive athletics on its newly remodeled campus, which features updates to everything from the gym to performance arts facilities.
Restored prairie and a glacial kettle pond at Acewood Park
Acewood Park is home to trails that snake around a large kettle pond and through ongoing prairie restoration. It also has a playground and basketball court. “I love Acewood Park,” Kane says. “It’s such a great little pocket.” Elvehjem Park offers fields, play equipment and a small nature sanctuary on its northern edge. An “all-wheel spot,” which will include areas for skateboarding and riding scooters, is in the planning stages. Droster Park is close to the eastern edge of Elvehjem and is home to fields and play equipment. Canoers, kayakers and ice-fishers can access Lake Monona, only a mile from Elvehjem’s western edge.
El Rancho and Cottage Café among nearby dining favorites
Elvehjem is primarily residential but borders pockets of shopping and dining along Cottage Grove Road. “El Rancho is right there,” Kane says. “They have amazing tacos and tamales.” The Cottage Cafe is a local breakfast and lunch favorite that delivers elevated diner fare in a simple, modest setting. This greasy spoon is known for its eggs Benedict and biscuits and gravy. “It doesn’t matter what day you go, it’s incredibly packed and amazing,” Kane says. The Antiques Mall of Madison has served the area for 40 years. Metro Market on Cottage Grove Road is the nearest grocery store, no more than 3 miles away for Elvehjem residents.
