Stylish and modern define historic Town of Middleton
Town of Middleton offers more than a typical suburban Wisconsin community. Beyond the parks, the history, the A-rated schools and the walkability, Town of Middleton also offers eye-catching new homes in growing subdivisions, a multi-use town center and a location 12 miles from Downtown Madison.
Founded in 1848, the area was mostly farmed until the mid-20th century. Today, the names Middleton, Town of Middleton and West Middleton are used almost interchangeably to define the large semi-rural and semi-residential suburb that stretches nearly 20 square miles. West of Madison, the state capital, Town of Middleton pre-dates Madison and features more than 20 historic landmarks dating back to when Black Hawk and Algonquin native Americans lived here. Today, the population is nearly 6,900.
Middleton was the first community in Wisconsin to embrace the principals of New Urbanism, which places homes, businesses and parks in proximity. According to Keith McNeely, Realtor with First Weber Inc., a Madison native and a real estate agent for almost eight years, “Our location on the edge of Madison and our Madison schools are big reasons people look for homes in Town of Middleton. Madison is progressive regarding new home developments. Newcomers are always surprised by how many architecturally stylish new homes are available here.”
The average price per square foot in the Town of Middleton is $270.

Buildable lots and brand-new homes welcome locals and newcomers
Streetscapes range from long stretches of rural roads alongside farmland to residential subdivisions with sidewalks and large lawns. The town center of Downtown Middleton shows off cobblestone streets, ground-level restaurants and boutiques with residential units above, abundant lighting for nighttime events and the Middleton Performing Arts Center.
While more than 4,200 single-family homes can be found inside Town of Middleton, plenty of buildable lots are for sale. They range from a quarter acre to a full acre. Condominiums or townhomes sell for around $200,000 to around $700,000, while three- and four-bedroom homes built in the 1990s have recently sold from about $360,000 to $400,000. Subdivisions such Blackhawk offer luxury estates priced from $1 million to $2.4 million on properties of half- to a full acre.
“Madison is a huge biotech hub,'' McNeely says. "Epic Systems’s U.S. headquarters is 10 minutes away. I work with homebuyers who are moving here from Los Angeles, and they are truly amazed at what $1 million buys in the Madison area.”
You can find larger homes in the new developments of the Town of Middleton.

Year-round outdoor events offer fun and plenty of laughter
Events take place year-round. "Have you ever heard of the “Cow Chips Classic?,'' asked McNeely. Held annually on Labor Day Weekend in Prairie du Sac, about 18 miles north of Middleton, the Wisconsin State Cow Chip Throw is billed as "The Laughing Stock of Wisconsin for 50 Years." Winters are cold and snowy in Wisconsin, so skiing and ski jumping at Blackhawk Ski Hill keeps locals fit and warm. The site doubles as a mountain biking destination in summer.
The Middleton Good Neighbor Festival is held every August. It features big-top tents, an art fair, parades and plenty of rides.
