Life along Second Street and the Merrimack River

Named for the park that sits in the center of the neighborhood, Wolfe Park is just west of the Merrimack River and Interstate 293, with a mix of residential houses and several commercial businesses on Second Street. “It’s a good neighborhood,” says William Kanteres, broker at Manchester-based Kanteres Real Estate. “There are a lot of Little League and athletic events that take place at Wolfe Park, and the homes are moderately priced.” Residents can shop or dine nearby, cross the river to get downtown, or head 22 miles south to the Pheasant Lane Mall and the Massachusetts border. Wolfe Park itself is a major hub for local sports tournaments and pickup games. North near the Piscataquog River is a small boat launch, dog park and bike trail that stretches over the Merrimack River. Most homes were built mid-century, meaning most floor plans are smaller and houses sit on modest. However, a few newer constructions add a bit of square footage and space. Because they live close to downtown and the airport, Wolfe Park residents have access to plenty of city amenities, while still living a small-town lifestyle.

Shops and restaurants on Second Street

Second Street is the area’s main thoroughfare, which is flanked on both sides by several shops, restaurants, commercial buildings and medical clinics. On its south side are large stores like Trader Joe’s, Kohl’s and Marshalls. Among the chain fast food joints are locally owned spots like T-Bones Great American Eatery and KC’s Rib Shack, which has a rustic roadhouse interior and serves racks of ribs and pulled pork sandwiches. Second Street stretches all the way south to the Massachusetts border, where it becomes the Daniel Webster Highway. The highway is home to several strip malls and the Pheasant Lane Mall, which has over 100 stores. There are also dozens of familiar store brands like Costco, Walmart and Target.

Midcentury New England homes and new traditional constructions

Side roads branch off Boynton Street, creating a network of quiet suburbs and residential neighborhoods. The majority of the housing in Wolfe Park was built between the 1920s and 1960s, and compact designs, such as Cape Cods and ranch-style homes, are common. Modest lots offer enough room for a few shade trees and the occasional backyard pool. The smaller, mid-1900s single-family homes often cost between $250,000 and $450,000, but the few new constructions with traditional elements and larger floor plans may list between $500,000 and $700,000. A few homes fall into a flood zone due to their proximity to the Merrimack River, so some mortgage providers may require flood insurance.

Local baseball leagues at Wolfe Park

Right in the center of the neighborhood is Wolfe Park, which has a small playground and shares space with The Growing Years daycare center. The park is mostly popular because of its large basketball court and surrounding ballfields used for community pickup games. Wolfe Park is also where West Side Little League teams play ball. “This is where you can cheer on neighborhood kids as they make their Little League debuts. Everyone knows each other here,” Kanteres says. On the north side of the neighborhood on South Main Street is the start of the Piscataquog River Park Bike Path, which crosses the Hands Across the Merrimack Footbridge into the downtown part of Manchester. The Manchester Dog Park and Bass Island Park are both on Second Street, where owners can bring their pets to play, or boaters can launch their watercraft or kayaks from the small boat ramp nearby.

Getting around in Manchester and commutes to Boston

As the neighborhood is just 5 miles across the Merrimack River from the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, Wolfe Park residents can get dropped off at the terminal in less than 15 minutes. Downtown Manchester itself is about 2 miles away and can be reached by crossing the Merrimack at Granite Street. Several bus lines through the Manchester Transit Authority run up and down Second Street throughout the day, and there are also a few stops on South Main Street. Those who live in Manchester but work in Boston can drive 54 miles south via Interstate 93 to reach Boston. When traffic is light, the trip takes about an hour.
