Convenient living in northern Maplewood

The northern Maplewood community of Gladstone attracts buyers with a convenient lifestyle surrounded by urban and outdoor amenities. “Gladstone is near Maplewood’s primary commercial area,” says Lyn Bockert, Real Estate Agent at Keller Williams Premier Realty. “The community is incredibly diverse, with a wide range of age groups and ethnicities, and there’s comradery among locals because of that.” White Bear Avenue is on its eastern border, featuring local eateries and retailers within walking distance. The neighborhood is also sandwiched between Keller Regional Park and Phalen Regional Park, and residents are accustomed to beach access, hiking trails, and a thriving recreation scene nearby. Mainstays like The Best Steak House and Gladstone Community Center play a role in maintaining a suburban know-your-neighbor feel despite such immediate access to St. Paul. And with easy access to U.S. Route 61 on the western border, trips into downtown St. Paul are accessible within a 5-mile drive.

Mid-century ranch-styles and cottage homes

The housing market in Gladstone is competitive due to the low entry pricing and range of housing options. “There’s been a slowdown of activity due to the lack of inventory,” says Bockert, with nearly 50 years of real estate experience. “But the housing market is very strong for sellers.” Most homes were constructed in the 1950s, resulting in mid-century cottage and ranch-style designs common to the era. With a median sales price of $336,000, homes here cost around $100,000 less than the national median. Prices range from $200,000 for a two-bedroom cottage to $400,000 for a four-bedroom Ranch-style with waterfront views of Lake Phalen. Residential streets are situated off Frost Avenue in a grid-like pattern. Homes often feature mid-sized lots and paved driveways leading to multi-car garages.

Education at School District 622

Gladstone families are zoned for North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale School District 622. Students can attend Weaver Elementary, John Glenn Middle and North Senior High School, which have earned ratings of C-plus, C-plus and B from the educational review site Niche. Weaver Elementary School offers a Multilingual Learners program that improves English comprehension while developing native language skills in Spanish, Hmong or Somali. John Glenn Middle School has a robust sports program with a range of opportunities from cross country and soccer to swimming in partnership with North Senior High School. North Senior High School serves around 1,500 students and is Minnesota's second-most diverse public high school. Private options like Hill Murray School and Mounds Park Academy are also available.

Regional amenities and the Gladstone Community Center

When seeking time outdoors, Robinhood Park is within walking distance of many homes. It has a mulched playground with swings and provides access to the Gateway State Trail, an 18-mile path that connects to downtown St. Paul. The Gladstone Community Center is located here, offering enrichment courses like swimming, painting, knitting, and woodcarving for children and adults. Keller Regional Park is on the northern border, featuring an archery range, a fishing pier and a boat launch for days spent on Keller Lake. Or Phalen Regional Park to the south, with a picnic pavilion, a public beach and scenic waterfall views. It's also home to the public Phalen Park Golf Course, which offers an 18-hole championship course and indoor simulators for fine-tuning skills all year. Aldrich Ice Arena is less than a mile to the east. It hosts local high school hockey games in the fall and is a versatile space equipped for both ice and non-ice events.

Shopping along White Bear Avenue

Groceries and everyday essentials are available along White Bear Avenue within a 2-mile drive north of Gladstone. There’s a mix of name-brand grocers like Cub Foods or Hy-Vee Grocery and big-box retailers like The Home Depot, PetSmart and Target along the thoroughfare. For more retail options, Maplewood Mall is 3 miles away. It offers a selection of department stores like Macy's, Kohl’s and JCPenney. When dining in the area, Mike's Corner Cafe prepares home-style meals, hearty soups, and traditional diner fare with recipes that transcend generations. For authentic Indian cuisine, Taste of India Restaurant offers naan bread and a wide selection of curry and biryani options spiced to preference. Or The Best Steak House, which is family-owned and has served quality steaks in Maplewood for over 40 years.

Take the Metro bus or commute on U.S. Route 61

Frost Avenue runs along the north side of the community, connecting residents to U.S. Route 61 for trips to neighboring areas and St. Paul. Those seeking public options can take the Metro Transit bus, which operates along Route 61. When traveling farther, the Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport is 15 miles away. For healthcare, the M Health Fairview St. John's Hospital is 4 miles north of the neighborhood.
