Maryland Heights offers housing prices below the national median and popular schools. Maryland Heights is rated by Niche as one of the top 10 Missouri suburbs to buy a house. A key reason Maryland Heights is so desirable is its schools. The city of 28,000 people is packed with six public schools, and four of them have been recognized as National Blue Ribbon Schools, the highest honor the Department of Education gives to schools. But schools are just one factor that has pushed Maryland Heights into the spotlight among St. Louis suburbs.
Finding a home in Maryland Heights
The town’s residential areas are a network of subdivisions and cul-de-sacs with a variety of home styles; ‘60s and ‘70s ranch homes, as well as colonial revivals from the same era, are some of the most common. Both home styles are known for their open, simple layouts that make interior decorating a breeze. Houses in Maryland Heights are in demand, as there is less than a month of home inventory on the market there, indicating it’s a seller’s market. Still homebuyers will find homes at many price points. Turnkey homes can be found for $175,000, though it’s not uncommon for houses to fetch $600,000 or more, says Coldwell Banker Realty Gundaker Sales Associate Jim Moll. The city has a median housing price of about $270,000, far below the national median.

Children attend two school districts
Maryland Heights is serviced by two highly rated school systems: Pattonville R-3 School District, given a grade of A by Niche, and Parkway School District, which receives an A-plus from Niche. These two school districts are among the top reasons homebuyers head to Maryland Heights, Moll says. Students on the southwest side of Maryland Heights are districted to McKelvey Elementary School, and they’ll advance to Northeast Middle School and North High School, 6 miles and 4 miles outside the city respectively. Meanwhile, other students likely will attend one of the other three elementary schools in Maryland Heights: Rose Acres Elementary School, Parkwood Elementary School or Remington Traditional School, a kindergarten through eighth grade school. From there they’ll move on to Pattonville Heights Middle School and Pattonville High School. Students on the northwest side of Maryland Heights are districted to Holman Middle School, less than 3 miles outside the city.

Enjoying Creve Coeur Lake
Vacationers in the late 1800s traveled from afar to relax at Creve Coeur Lake, but Maryland Heights residents only need to drive a few minutes to visit the 2,145-acre park. On a sunny day it likely is full of boaters, bicyclists and paddlers journeying across the 320-acre lake or taking a scenic tour around it. Set out in a kayak or canoe to complete the 6-mile water trail around Creve Coeur Lake. The trail takes you past important sites in the park’s history as a resort more than 130 years ago, including the long-shuttered amusement park and former speakeasies. There is plenty to do on land too, as Creve Coeur Park is home to four playgrounds, an archery range, a zipline course and a lakeside beach area.
