Country living is just east of Memphis

East Memphis is filled with suburban developments, but in Southern Shelby County, rolling hills surround the quiet suburban streets. “It’s right on the Mississippi border and has more of a rural feel, but is still conveniently located,” says Lisa Harris, a Realtor at Crye Leike. Just 30 minutes from the city center, Southern Shelby County is great for Memphis locals searching for larger lots than can be found downtown.

Spacious houses give residents room to grow

Southern Shelby County homes come in classic styles, including ranches, neo-colonials and modern farmhouses with three or more bedrooms. Most homes were built in the 1990s and early 2000s as part of large developments; many have large windows, gabled roofs and eclectic brick or stone siding. According to Harris, the neighborhood offers large lots, ranging from 1 to more than 10 acres. The price range is about $250,000 to around $675,000, though some higher priced properties can approach $1 million. Those properties, typically, are on larger lots with bedrooms and square footage exceeding the neighborhood norms.

Retail favorites along Winchester Road

Most of the county’s shopping happens along Winchester Road, where big box department stores and chain restaurants line the street running east and west. The selection includes Lowe’s, Burlington, Starbucks and more. Residents have plenty of grocery options, with supermarkets including Costco, Kroger, Sam’s Club and Walmart clustered within 1 mile of each other. Hickory Ridge Mall and Shopping Center nearby has additional clothing stores, salons and dining establishments. For a taste of the Southern community, foodies go to Huey’s. From June to October, locals flock to the Winchester Farmers Market to buy fresh produce at the Winchester Town Common. Vendors from around the county come to sell locally grown fruits, vegetables, canned goods and more. The Winchester Town Commons also hosts seasonal and holiday markets in the off-season.
