Homes and stores next to downtown Methuen
Just east of downtown of Methuen is the East End neighborhood, a swath of homes and recreation bordered by the Merrimack River and split by Interstate 495, giving residents easy access to river recreation. The residential pockets are all south of a packed thoroughfare, State Route 213, which is the home to many of the stores and restaurants in the neighborhood. The neighborhood is also home to one of the larger parks in the Methuen area, along with most of the public schools for the city, meaning that commutes to education or fun are always pretty close. “Families have been here for many years,” says Realtor Juliette Bergeron with RE/MAX Innovative Properties in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, who has served the area for over 20 years. “We all know each other around here. It’s a very friendly area.”

The Loop and local Methuen dining
The Loop is one of the larger shopping centers in Methuen that sits just north of the homes in the East End, bringing an array of eateries and other businesses a short drive from residents’ doors. The mall is also home to an AMC Theater, making it a popular spot for dining, shopping, or hanging out. For dining out, locals can stop for fresh-cut meats and premade sandwiches at Borrelli’s Italian Deli, which has been a part of the community for over 50 years. Along the same road is the El Patron Grill and Cantina, which strives to serve authentic Mexican Latin cuisine alongside fresh margaritas and other brightly colored cocktails. For a sweet treat, Mann Orchards is closer to downtown Methuen and is known for “wonderful fruit pies, produce and vegetables,” Coco says. Groceries can be found at the Walmart or Market Basket at the Methuen Shopping Center, located right next to The Loop.

Larger lots for Methuen colonials and townhomes
The homes all around the East End line winding blocks with gentle curves, with homes ranging from colonial revivals and split-level homes to condos and townhomes on the eastern end of the interstate. Most properties include front and back lawn space, which residents keep well-manicured. “Lots tend to be a lot larger in Methuen compared to a lot of other cities,” says Rick Coco, a Re/Max Partners broker who has served the community for over 48 years. The atmosphere in The East End is also conducive to relationships among neighbors, with afternoon conversations in the backyard and over garden fences. Townhomes and condo prices range from $200,000 to $450,000, and single-family homes often fall between $475,000 and around $900,000. As the Merrimack River is prone to flooding during heavy rains, lenders may require the purchase of flood insurance for some homes.

Methuen backyards and the Edward S. Alekel Veterans Memorial Park
Due to the larger lots and yards in the East End, residents have all the recreation they need in their own homes, from pools to playsets just beyond the back porch. However, the Edward S. Alekel Veterans Memorial Park offers a massive alternative to backyard fun. The park provides three baseball diamonds alongside a playset and a roller hockey rink for plenty of options when the weather is nice outside. The neighborhood also has several smaller parks, from the hidden soccer fields at Ashford St Park to the baseball diamond at the quiet Sargent Field. Schruender Park offers a respite by the Merrimack River for residents who want to be closer to nature. This pocket park provides access to the water under the shade of red maple and cherry trees.

Split by Interstate 495
The East End sits at the junction of 495 and 93, which Coco says makes it a prime commuter location and extremely driver-friendly. Residents here can use that artery to drive south toward Boston, a trip of just over 30 miles. These two major interstates are connected by State Route 213, also known as the Loop connector, which is a major road for the community as many take it to reach the heart of Methuen. The suburban area sees little pedestrian traffic as many choose to drive around the community. Boston Logan International Airport is 33 miles away in Boston for longer trips, and the Holy Family Hospital sits in the neighborhood for medical care.
Methuen events and fundraisers
The city is home to several events that locals and visitors can join. Methuen Day takes place in October each year in the heart of downtown and residents can meet up with friends and neighbors as they stroll past vendors, booths for local organizations, and various stages and games for the whole family to enjoy. In early December, more than 30,000+ visitors come to the Methuen Tree Festival each year. Highlights include visits from Santa, seasonal raffles and festive decorations donated by local families. Since its start over 30 years ago, the festival has raised over $2 million for historical preservation and scholarships for communities around the area.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
