Lafayette Parish 70503, 70506, 70508, 70529
One of 22 parishes in central Louisiana collectively known as Acadiana, Central Lafayette Parish is in the beating heart of Cajun Country. People here live a “work hard but play harder” lifestyle that takes them from cities like Lafayette to the wilds of the state nicknamed the Sportsman's Paradise. Starting in the 1750s, the lands around the Atchafalaya Basin were settled by the Acadians, or Cajuns, after that population was expelled from Canada. Gaining land grants from the French and Spanish governments, the Acadians built communities along the rivers and bayous of South and Central Louisiana. Almost half of the Acadian population was lost during their long exile, so those remaining, even today, have an unrivaled zest for life. You’ll find that "joie de vivre" and tons of fun alongside history and culture throughout Central Lafayette Parish.
Homes in the region are a cornucopia of ages and styles, but what unifies them is the neighborly feeling numerous front porches and large lawns can bring. Cottages are found throughout Central Lafayette Parish and range from classic styles to contemporary to Queen Anne-inspired. Of course, there are plenty of Acadian style homes too. You’ll spot ranch styles, shotgun houses, bungalows, and contemporary architecture as you roam the rural roads around the parish, and many custom-built residences will stand out as well. New homes are being built with Hardi-plank siding to deter termites. Prices start around $75,000 for fixer uppers and go up to $350,000 for a large custom-built house.
While there are many schools in this part of the parish, two stand out. Prairie Elementary provides a nurturing environment so every child can explore their strengths and talents. Known for its French Immersion Program, students learn to be global citizens while exploring the culture of Louisiana. Acadiana High School opened in 1969 and is known for its sports programs including soccer, track, and baseball. The school has won the state football championship six times since 2006.
Recreation is easy to find in Central Lafayette. From sporting endeavors like hunting and fishing to an afternoon at the movies, it’s all close by. The Wetlands golf course, for instance, is found near the top of the parish, and welcomes players of all ages and skill levels. The 18-hole course has large open fairways and rolling terrain as well as five tees from 5,000 to 7,300 yards depending on your level of comfort. TifDwarf greens add an extra challenge for golfers which has helped make the course one of the most popular in the area. After a round or two of golf, try the restaurant and bar for delicious drinks, snacks, and sandwiches.
Another option for fun is Epic Entertainment, an indoor/outdoor recreation center. This family-friendly venue encourages you to compete in laser tag, game in the arcade, or even play at the indoor playground. Free inflatable games like archery and Connect 4 are available for all ages while more challenging experiences, like 15 different climbing activities, cater to a slightly older crowd. Unique games are ready to be tried too. Four-person Hologate VR allows four friends to have snowball fights or to battle dragons, among other scenarios.
The fun-loving Cajun spirit flows through the parish as does the culture’s hard work ethic. Nowhere is that more evident than at LARC’s Acadian Village. This folk-life museum allows visitors to experience life in the 1800s as they wander through nearly a dozen restored Cajun homes and businesses complete with era-specific antiques and artifacts. The site offers year-round guided tours, educational programs, and artisan demonstrations. Established in 1976, the village is dedicated to preserving Cajun heritage and funding the work of LARC, an organization which supports disabled individuals in reaching their goals.
When it’s time for dinner, check out Nunu’s Markets. This local grocery chain opened in nearby Milton almost 50 years ago. The store created its own special spice blends to sell as well as marinated and seasoned meats. Just fire up the grill or oven and let the family-owned and operated market take care of the rest.
Central Lafayette Parish is unique in its location and history. Rich in Cajun culture and with plenty of options for fun, the neighborhood invites those seeking peace from the bustle of the city while offering easy access to Lafayette, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans.
