A laid-back home base in Prince George's County

Commuters who work throughout Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia often set up Mitchellville as a low-key home base. “It’s convenient to everything within the DMV area," says Monica Bryant, a Realtor with Century 21 who's lived in the area for decades. She says, “The Beltway is right there. You’re 20 minutes from D.C., and you’re about 30 minutes from Annapolis and Virginia.” Residences are also near shopping centers, golf courses and an amusement park, and houses are organized into neat subdivisions.

Ranch-style homes and Colonial Revivals on peaceful streets

Most of Mitchellville's homes were built in the late 1900s and early 2000s. Homebuyers find neat subdivisions featuring curving streets lined with single-family homes. Ranch-style houses, Colonial Revivals with brick and vinyl siding and colonial-inspired townhouses make up most of Mitchellville's housing inventory. The median sales price is about $480,000, which is slightly higher than the national median.

Just to the east, golfers may join the private Country Club at Woodmore, which has an 18-hole course, tennis courts and swimming pools. “There’s also a great park called Watkins Park,” Bryant says. “It’s great to take kids to. There’s a train and a petting zoo there too.” The petting zoo, called Old Maryland Farm, is an educational space where children learn about plants and animals. Watkins Park also has multiple playgrounds and a network of shaded nature trails. For more adventurous weekends, the roller coasters, water park and kiddie rides at Six Flags America are about 5 miles south of Mitchellville.

Commuters drive toward Washington, D.C. or Annapolis

Most residents don't work in town, and end up driving to Washington, D.C., which is about 20 miles east of Mitchellville. As the nearest metro stop, Downtown Largo is at least 2 miles away for most residents, many commuters end up driving. By car, the drive to downtown D.C. can take anywhere between 20 minutes and an hour, depending on traffic. U.S. Route 50, known here as John Hanson Highway, passes through the north side of the community, taking drivers about 20 miles to Annapolis. Residents have easy access to the Capital Beltway, which loops around Maryland, D.C. and Northern Virginia, via John Hanson Highway and Landover Road. For longer trips, the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport are both about 20 miles from Mitchellville.
