Named after the daughter of Nathaniel Hawthorne
Hawthorne may seem like a blip on the map compared to the Big Apple, but its charms are as understated as its history. Its very name is rooted in the family legacy of Nathaniel Hawthorne, whose daughter, a catholic nun, founded Rosary Hill Home on Linda Avenue — still in use as a nursing home. Hawthorne's Gate of Heaven Cemetery is also the final resting place of baseball legend Babe Ruth. Conceived in the late 19th century as a country escape for city slickers, the desirability of this area still lies in its quiet streets and proximity to natural beauty. Hawthorne also continues appealing to people in New York City, just 30 minutes away.
More affordable than Pleasantville, Thornville and Valhalla
"Compared to some of the surrounding towns, you can get a bit more for your money in Hawthorne," says Matthew Valvano, a broker with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New York Properties. Valvano has been in real estate for 17 years. Bordered by Pleasantville, Thornville, and Valhalla, the average home value in Hawthorne is anywhere from $70,000 to $150,000 less than its nearest neighbors. Modest properties typically range from the low $500,000s to the upper $700,000s, but homes over 2,000 square feet can climb toward a million. Colonials, ranch-style homes and Cape Cods make up the fabric of Hawthorne, with unique architectural details interspersed throughout — from shingle facades to A-frame roofs. Trees here are mature, providing a natural canopy; sidewalks are minimal and roads show wear from winter.

20,000 acres of parkland
Westchester County has 20,000 acres of parkland, making green spaces practically unlimited. Broadway Field is a community gathering space on the western edge of Hawthorne. There, locals strike up a game of basketball and hear cheers from nearby Volunteer Field, home of Sherman Park Little League, echoing through the air. Graham Hills Park and Rockefeller State Park Preserve are both less than 4 miles from these smaller neighborhood parks. Both are impressive, but Rockefeller State Park is the largest, with over 45 miles of multi-use trails winding through peaks and valleys blanketed by oaks, poplars and maples. Laid out by the Rockefeller family, these trails lead to popular sites, like Swan Lake, a popular fishing destination. Locals have access to even more trails and fishing spots, along with a playground for the kids, at the over 2,000-acre Kensico Reservoir — 5 miles from home.
Full moon hikes and herbalism workshops
Broadway Field hosts an annual autumn fair with live music, vendors, bouncy houses and slides. Rockefeller State Park Preserve holds monthly events, from full moon hikes to herbalism workshops. Locals can also attend a farmers market in Downtown Pleasantville every Saturday year-round, less than 3 miles away at Memorial Plaza.
