Hawthorne
More affordable than Pleasantville, Thornville and Valhalla
"Compared to some of the surrounding towns, you can get a bit more for your money in Hawthorne," says Matthew Valvano, a broker with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New York Properties. Valvano has been in real estate for 17 years. Bordered by Pleasantville, Thornville, and Valhalla, the average home value in Hawthorne is anywhere from $70,000 to $150,000 less than its nearest neighbors. Modest properties typically range from the low $500,000s to the upper $700,000s, but homes over 2,000 square feet can climb toward a million. Colonials, ranch-style homes and Cape Cods make up the fabric of Hawthorne, with unique architectural details interspersed throughout — from shingle facades to A-frame roofs. Trees here are mature, providing a natural canopy; sidewalks are minimal and roads show wear from winter.
20,000 acres of parkland
Westchester County has 20,000 acres of parkland, making green spaces practically unlimited. Broadway Field is a community gathering space on the western edge of Hawthorne. There, locals strike up a game of basketball and hear cheers from nearby Volunteer Field, home of Sherman Park Little League, echoing through the air. Graham Hills Park and Rockefeller State Park Preserve are both less than 4 miles from these smaller neighborhood parks. Both are impressive, but Rockefeller State Park is the largest, with over 45 miles of multi-use trails winding through peaks and valleys blanketed by oaks, poplars and maples. Laid out by the Rockefeller family, these trails lead to popular sites, like Swan Lake, a popular fishing destination. Locals have access to even more trails and fishing spots, along with a playground for the kids, at the over 2,000-acre Kensico Reservoir — 5 miles from home.Full moon hikes and herbalism workshops
Broadway Field hosts an annual autumn fair with live music, vendors, bouncy houses and slides. Rockefeller State Park Preserve holds monthly events, from full moon hikes to herbalism workshops. Locals can also attend a farmers market in Downtown Pleasantville every Saturday year-round, less than 3 miles away at Memorial Plaza.Schools rated B plus to A minus by Niche
The Mount Pleasant Central School District serves Hawthorne. Its schools include Hawthorne Elementary, for kindergarten through second grade, Columbus Elementary, for third through fifth grade, Westlake Middle School and Westlake High School. Hawthorne Elementary earns a B plus from Niche while Columbus Elementary and both the middle and high schools score an A minus. The high school's clubs offer the exciting opportunity to take trips to explore New York City's range of art museums.Grab a slice at Hawthorne Pizzeria
Hawthorne is home to a few unique small businesses and cozy eateries, such as Railway Cafe & Grill, Hawthorne Pizzeria and La Casa De Nina — a new spot for Peruvian and Greek food. A 3-mile drive leads them to Rose Hill Shopping Center, home to ACME Market for groceries. Neighbors can also head the same distance to downtown Pleasantville to catch a movie at the Jacob Burns Film Center on Manville Road. Several malls are within 7 miles of Hawthorne, including The Westchester in White Plains with brands like Aerie, Alo, Forever 21 and more.
Access to the longest parkway in New York State
Three major parkways converge in Hawthorne: Taconic State Parkway, Sprain Brook Parkway and Saw Mill River Parkway. Taconic Parkway is the longest parkway in New York State. "Hawthorne’s location is super convenient. It's centrally located in Westchester, and the Metro North train station is right in the middle of town off Elwood Avenue," Valvano says. Surrounding airports include LaGuardia Airport, John F. Kennedy International and Westchester County Airport. LaGuardia is the farthest, at around 35 miles away. Eight miles from home, locals also have access to the 415-bed Westchester Medical Center.
