New England homes, from Colonial Revivals to Cape Cods
Homes on these hilly residential streets are closely spaced, with small lawns. Most were built between the 1920s and 1980s, including Colonial Revivals. “It’s older New England architecture. We have bungalows, Cape Cods, Colonials, and a lot of raised ranches, which often have separate kitchens in the basement so they can house multiple generations or multiple families,” Donnelly says. Prices start at about $355,000 and go up to a little more than $505,000 for the neighborhood’s single-family homes, while townhouse-style condo units run anywhere from $231,000 to $290,000. “The market is pretty good. It’s softening a little due to rising inventory, but it’s still a seller’s market.” Most homes are listed for 20 days before going under contract, which is 24 days faster than the national average.
Magnet programs at New Bedford High
The New Bedford Public Schools system serves students in Westview Park. Elementary schoolers go to either Rodman or Brooks, depending on their address, so parents are advised to double-check the boundary lines ahead of registration. Both elementaries receive B-minuses from Niche. Older students continue to Keith Middle, which gets a C, and New Bedford High, which gets a B-minus. The high school offers an International Baccalaureate program and the Magnet Academy of Civic Leadership & World Studies. The Fine Arts Department offers more than 22 unique visual arts, music and theatre course, too. “They have a really good marching band and a great drama company, one of the best in New England actually,” Donnelly says.University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, a major local employer, is a little more than 4 miles southwest of Westview Park. Originally established as the New Bedford Textile School in 1895, UMass Dartmouth now offers 120 undergraduate and 42 graduate fields of study.
Whaling City Golf Course, Buttonwood Park nearby
The public, 18-hole, Donald Ross-designed Whaling City Golf Course is less than 2 miles northwest of most homes, across the I-195 cloverleaf. The 97-acre Buttonwood Park, about 2 miles south across Route 6, offers more recreation. The sprawling historic park is the largest – and busiest – in the city, featuring gardens, sports courts, a playground and a pond. There’s even a zoo at the south end of the park. The Great Lawn at its center hosts the New Bedford Farmers Market, which moves inside the community center in the winter, and the annual New Bedford Whaling City Festival in July. East of the neighborhood, there’s Brooklawn Park. “That’s where local town sports take place,” Donnelly says of the 85-acre sports complex. She adds that residents looking for waterfront recreation can head to The South End, where there are beaches at Clarks Cove and on Buzzards Bay.Dartmouth shopping and Downtown New Bedford dining
There’s a string of stores along Route 6, from Shaw’s to Walgreens, that cover everyday essentials, along with several casual eateries and chain restaurants. But Downtown New Bedford is the heart of the city’s dining scene. “There are a ton of restaurants, tapas places, breweries even. And it’s a really pretty area with cobblestone streets,” Donnelly says, recommending The Black Whale for upscale New England seafood and Moby Dick Brewery for laid-back pub fare. “You can easily take Route 6 into Dartmouth for more grocery stores. And the Dartmouth Mall is still a thing. For some reason, it’s stood the test of time,” she adds. The mall, which is about 3 miles west, is anchored by Macy’s and Burlington. There’s also an AMC movie theater. Walmart Supercenter and Target are nearby, too.
Sandwiched between Interstate 195 and U.S. Route 6
Interstate 195 and U.S. Route 6 skirt past the north and south ends of the community, respectively. Both connect west toward Providence and east through downtown to Fairhaven. The New Bedford Regional Airport is less than 3 miles north of Westview Park, and Southeastern Regional Transit Authority bus stops are scattered throughout the neighborhood, providing service all around town. “This is a great, accessible location,” Donnelly says, observing that Providence, at about 30 miles away, is just a 45-minute drive. “It’s accessible even to Boston, Cape Cod, and we have a ferry to Martha’s Vineyard,” she adds. All three destinations, home to local employers and tourist attractions alike, are within about 60 miles, or two hours, of Westview Park.
