Contemporary suburbs close to verdant parks and nature habitats
A leafy valley engulfed by beautiful dense woods, Pike Creek offers a serene atmosphere to call home.
“People go there for the peacefulness,” says Mary Corcoran, a Realtor with Patterson Schwartz Real Estate, “They love the walking trails, the nature, the wildlife. That’s what people are looking for there.” In Pike Creek, people live in quiet suburban single-family subdivisions and multi-family developments among rolling hills adorned in an abundance of greenery about 10 miles west of downtown Wilmington.
Pike Creek is a stone's throw away from city amenities in both Wilmington and Newark.

Living near White Clay Creek State Park
There’s no shortage of nature to explore in Pike Creek, whether on foot, a bicycle or horseback. Spanning more than 200 acres, Carousel Park features a bucolic lake surrounded by open green meadows, natural wildlife habitats and an equestrian center offering lessons and therapeutic rides for people of all abilities.
Nature enthusiasts also enjoy everything White Clay Creek State Park has to offer. Anglers can cast a line in the creek, the most heavily stocked water in the state, according to Delaware State Parks. Locals can also appreciate the park’s densely wooded trails available to hikers and bikers. For even more adventure, try your hand at 18 rounds of disc golf. The community shows its support for the park during Creek Fest, an annual event starting in May with nature activities, food trucks and live music. The jams continue during the park’s summer concert series. “It’s a lot of fun,” Corcoran says. “Tons of people come out to watch local bands perform. My husband performs each year drumming for a Beatles cover band.”

Spacious colonials and comfy townhouse developments
According to Corcoran, the beauty of the neighborhood makes this a highly sought-after area. In this suburban area that mostly grew in the latter half of the 20th century, spacious Colonial single-family homes and contemporary three-story brick townhouses with attached garages are set on curvilinear neighborhood streets. With a few multi-family developments in the community, too, about one-quarter of the community’s residents are renters. Mirroring local and national trends, home prices in Pike Creek are trending upward. Since January 2020, the average home value rose from $300,000 to $420,000 in February 2024. Single-family homes range from $500,000 to $700,000. Townhouses typically average around $450,000, while condos start around $150,000.

Local dining and shopping at PureBread and Zingo's
Limestone Road is the main thoroughfare that runs straight through the middle of town. It’s where you’ll find several shopping centers with just about everything you need, including a mix of local businesses and restaurants. PureBread Deli is a ‘paw’pular regional chain renowned for serving customers “French Poodles” and “Golden Retrievers” since 2001. (Don’t worry. Those are sandwiches made with turkey breast and other common sandwich toppings — not dog meat.)
While you can get your groceries and other household items from the ACME grocery store in the neighborhood, locals hold deep affection for Zingo’s, a local family-owned supermarket on the opposite side of Pike Creek, Corcoran says. “People who have been here forever love Zingo’s. It’s definitely a town staple.” For a broader shopping experience, head seven miles to Christiana Mall, the largest mall in the state with more than 130 stores and a Cinemark movie theater. Other retailers in the suburban retail district include Trader Joe’s, Costco and REI. The easy access to the mall area is also helpful in case of an emergency, as the ChristianaCare Hospital is near the Route 7 and Interstate 95 interchange.

Pike Creek is about five miles north of Downtown Newark and 10 miles west of Downtown Wilmington. To get to either one, residents can drive or catch a DART system bus, as Route 18 extends into the outer suburbs via Limestone Road and New Linden Hill Road. In either city center or at Churchman’s Crossing between them, folks can also hop on a regional SEPTA train to reach destinations in or around Philadelphia about 45 miles away. For more distant travel, people can catch an Amtrak train from Newark or Wilmington. The weather in my area is really nice for the seasons. The summers do not get too hot, the winters do not get too cold, and the fall and spring are really comfortable. Not very often do you need to worry about any severe weather threats. Overall the weather here is very nice.

There are many gyms and athletic facilities around the area. Many of them are private and you need a membership to have access to them, but there are some public gyms. Also there are very nice state parks that can be uses for walking, running, biking or anything else.

Pike Creek is awesome. It is a nice town/suburb outside of the city of Wilmington. Pike Creek is not too far from Newark, Delaware and the University of Delaware. Pike Creek is a very safe town. There are a lot of places to eat in Pike Creek. White Clay Creek State Park is not too far away if you like to run or ride your bike. The public schools around Pike Creek are terrible. I would recommend either a private school or a catholic school nearby. Overall, Pike Creek is a great place to live and I would highly recommend living here.
