The historic Norfolk neighborhood of West Ghent

West Ghent sits on the Elizabeth River at the eastern mouth of the Midtown Tunnel and is part of the historic Ghent area that offers a serene suburban environment for locals. The area also boasts many parks and historic local schools, only a quick oak-shaded walk away from homes. To those who live in the Norfolk area, West Ghent is often regarded as a “well-established and thriving community in close proximity to breweries, restaurants and popular commercial areas” says Kathryn Kramer, an agent with Howard Hanna who has served Norfolk for over 18 years.

Norfolk Colonial homes shrouded by oak trees

West Ghent is an extension of the historic Ghent neighborhood and offers a similar medley of architectural styles. Craftsman and Colonial Revival homes stand next to Spanish Hacienda-style homes and Dutch Colonials. Houses can start around $230,000 for a two-bedroom home and go to about $500,000 for a four-bedroom. The neighborhood’s established trees, well-maintained lawns and gardens offer a splash of green to complement the bright colors of the houses.

Ghent’s sanctuaries and playsets

Much like the rest of Norfolk, West Ghent has many parks for locals. Jeff Robertson Park offers a climbing structure and is part of the Elizabeth River Trail, popular among bikers and joggers. Right next to it is The Weyanoke Bird and Wildflower Sanctuary, which works to protect local birds and marshlands. Graydon Park is a smaller park with green space and is home to the area’s annual Christmas tree lighting. Westover Memorial Park is hidden next to local residences and is home to a 350-year-old oak tree dedicated to World War I veterans in April 1923.

Mediterranean delights and frothy pints

For dining options in West Ghent, there are plenty of delights for locals. Orapax Restaurant and Bar is a popular family-owned Greek and Mediterranean eatery with “shaded patio seating perfect for the summertime,” Kramer says. SmartMouth Brewing Co. is on the neighborhood's southern edge for residents looking for a highly rated local beer. For groceries, locals can choose from the Food Lion 1 mile away or The Fresh Market, only half a mile from the neighborhood’s center.

Mallory Country Club summer fun

The Mallory Country Club has been a central part of the neighborhood each summer for over 50 years. Open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the Mallory has a guarded outdoor pool, snack bar and frequent “bands and popular community events,” Kramer says. The Mallory is also home to the Dolphins, a recreational swim and dive team in the Virginia Beach Swim League.

The noise and smoke of Lambert’s Point Rail Yard

Behind the parks and houses of West Ghent lies the Lambert’s Point Rail Yard, a massive freight train area that often adds the rumble of diesel engines to the background of the neighborhood, with some occasional coal dust brought over by the breeze.
