An idyllic, well-known beach community on South Carolina’s Grand Strand
There's good reason why Cherry Grove is among the most popular communities on North Myrtle Beach’s corner of the Grand Strand, South Carolina's 60-plus-mile stretch of beaches. Homes steps from the ocean or along the channels that run throughout the area take advantage of its natural beauty and welcome all kinds of recreation, from riding jet skis and motorboats to sunbathing on the sand and walking along the pier. “Cherry Grove is probably one of our most well-known beaches,” says Kemp Nash, a Realtor at Century 21 Coastal Lifestyles and a lifelong North Myrtle Beach resident. "People have been going there since they were kids. They like it because they’ve been going there all their lives." Many properties in Cherry Grove are vacation homes or short-term rentals. Still, year-round residents enjoy the area’s scenery while still being a short walk or golf-cart ride to restaurants and a quick drive to grocers and major area attractions.
Plentiful coastal recreation includes boating in channels
The Intracoastal Waterway is accessible from the neighborhood, and Cherry Grove’s channels allow for boating, fishing and Jet Skiing right off private docks or the public boat ramp on 53rd Avenue. “You can navigate to the ocean within 10 minutes,” Nash says. "They just did dredging, so you can put motorboats in there." Many channel homes are also walkable to the ocean. A stroll along the beach leads to Cherry Grove Pier, where tourists and locals can grab a drink or go fishing. Each year, crowds gather here to enjoy the community’s Fourth of July fireworks. For a peaceful hike, Heritage Shores Nature Preserve has trails along the marsh. “That’s a great spot that not a lot of people know about,” says John Campbell, a local resident who's a Realtor at Century 21 Thomas. “You can sit down and have a picnic and see all the wildlife.” Locals can walk where the ocean and the community's inlet meet at Cherry Grove Point, at the far end of the neighborhood. Golfers have several courses they can play in and around the area, including the public Tidewater Golf Club and the private Surf Golf & Beach Club.
Homes range from cozy cottages to multimillion-dollar channel houses
Homes and condos throughout Cherry Grove stand on stilts and feature classic coastal styles with gently sloping roofs and wide balconies overlooking the water. Most condos are found on the oceanfront, and a two-bedroom unit generally costs between $250,000 and $450,000. Home prices vary greatly: Waterfront properties with several bedrooms can sell from $600,000 to several million dollars. “The channel houses are definitely more expensive if you’re on one of the navigable channels,” Nash says. “But you really feel like you’re on vacation when you wake up and see the water from your balcony.”
Smaller, ranch-style houses and cottages in subdivisions away from the water can sell for between $350,000 and $500,000. Tidewater Plantation is a gated golf community in the area with contemporary and new-traditional homes built in the 1990s and 2000s that sell for between $360,000 and $880,000. Cherry Grove has an overall CAP Index Crime Score of 2, lower than the national average of 4.
Flood insurance is required for many homebuyers in Cherry Grove
Many properties in Cherry Grove are in a flood zone, so some homeowners will need to purchase flood insurance. “You have the ocean and the channels, so it floods from both sides,” Nash says. “But the rental incomes in Cherry Grove on the channels are higher, so you’ve got more money to work with to cover flood insurance.”
High schoolers can earn college credit at Horry County Schools
Students living in the area are zoned for Ocean Drive Elementary School, which earns an A grade from Niche. North Myrtle Beach Middle School has an A-minus, and North Myrtle Beach High scores a B-plus. The high school participates in the Program for Accelerated College Enrollment, a dual enrollment opportunity that allows juniors and seniors to earn college credits.
Beachfront restaurants, pubs and more nearby on Ocean Drive Pavilion
Several restaurants dot the neighborhood. Snooky’s Oceanfront serves fresh seafood on its patio overlooking the ocean, and Duck Dive Bar and Grill has pub grub and a full bar. About 2 miles away, Main Street and Ocean Drive Pavilion host more bars, restaurants and local shops just off the beach. Locals are less than a 15-minute drive from dozens of shopping and dining options at Barefoot Landing, but everyday needs can be met close to home: Publix and Food Lion are among the many grocers and chains off Highway 17.
Essential services aren’t far from Cherry Grove
Downtown Myrtle Beach is about 20 miles away, but Nash says residents don’t usually have to leave town for shopping, dining and other essentials. “Growing up, Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach seemed like different worlds," he says. "But today, North Myrtle Beach has almost everything you need." Drivers can get to Myrtle Beach in about half an hour via South Carolina Highway 31 or U.S. Route 17, and it also has the closest international airport. Medical facilities like McLeod Seacoast Hospital and North Strand Emergency Room, both 3 miles from Cherry Grove, are closer to home.
