Point Loma Heights
Homes on the hills with ocean views
Single-family homes are set in the neighborhood's south, on hilly streets lined with palms and evergreen trees. Most houses here are from the early 20th-century, either Craftsman, American Colonial Revival or Spanish-style, but there are also midcentury and newer custom-built versions of these styles; residences set uphill usually offer sweeping ocean views. Single-family homes here typically go for between $1.5 to $3 million. “The homes here don’t have a super high turnover rate because people tend to stay here,” says Danny Gibbel, Realtor with Swell Property. “People find their forever homes here.” The northern half of the neighborhood is full of apartment buildings, but there are also townhouses and condos built between the 1990s and early 2000s, which range from $600,000 and $1 million.Point Loma High’s renowned college prep programs
Public schools in Point Loma Heights are zoned within the San Diego Unified district, which earns an overall A from Niche. Students might start out at the A-rated Ocean Beach Elementary, then advance to the A-minus rated Correia Middle. Point Loma High also earns an A-minus, offering students in all grades a College, Career Technical Education (CCTE) program that includes courses like Sports Medicine, Cinematic Arts and Principles of Engineering.Shopping at a historic repurposed naval training center
About a mile from the neighborhood, three lively blocks of Newport Avenue are lined with locally owned businesses like Cow Records and 1 Oak Jewelry, as well as fresh seafood restaurant Blue Water. Liberty Station shopping center is 4 miles away, set in a Spanish Colonial Revival-style building from 1923 that once served as San Diego’s naval training center. Today, Liberty Station houses boutiques, restaurants, art galleries and a popular public market. Here, residents can stock up on groceries at Vons or Trader Joe’s or dine at the market’s Cane Patch Kitchen, which serves up Creole classics like seafood gumbo. Cesarina on Voltaire Street is a local favorite for their modern takes on Italian classics and vegan options, but the ambiance is what truly sets it apart - a rustic yet stylish dining room with midcentury accents and a lush patio.City beach for dogs, surfers and sun-bathers
The 68-acre Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is about 2 miles from Point Loma Heights, and features sea caves and coastal bluffs; thrill-seeking locals might head here for cliff-diving, but most residents go to watch the sun as it sets over the Pacific. OB City Beach, located 2 miles north, features surfable waves, beach volleyball nets and a special off-leash area for dogs, known as Dog Beach. The 15-acre Bill Cleator Community Park, located behind Correia Middle School, offers open fields for softball and baseball games.A quick route to downtown San Diego
Interstate 8 forms the neighborhood's northern border and travels about 7 miles to downtown San Diego and Scripps Mercy Hospital. San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) buses stop locally on the corner of Voltaire Street and Catalina Boulevard and travel the greater San Diego area. Major thoroughfare Nimitz Boulevard starts just east of the neighborhood and travels about 3 miles to San Diego International Airport.
