Few Jersey Shore neighborhoods have as much hidden history as the quiet, suburban beach community of Laurence Harbor, located within Old Bridge Township. Its tranquil suburban nature belies a past as a former golf and country club, a vibrant beach resort, a rum-running hub during Prohibition, and a brick manufacturing center. Each of these themes have helped shape Laurence Harbor’s present character, which offers something for everyone.

Named for a land developer who built a local country club – frequented by Clark Gable, the Vanderbilt family, and even the future King George VI of Britain – Laurence Harbor evolved into a boardwalk and casino town in the 1940s and a residential suburb in the 1960s. The community still retains some of its industrial character on Industrial Drive – off Route 35 – while continuing its tradition as the first beach town before reaching Keansburg. Realtor Adrienne Marcigliano of EXIT Realty East Coast Shirvanian shares that, “Living in Laurence Harbor can be described as peaceful and suburban, with several parks and recreational areas. The community in Laurence Harbor is tight-knit and friendly, with a strong sense of pride in the town. The annual Old Bridge Day celebration brings together residents for a day of food, music, and fun.” Laurence Harbor not only enjoys the community events of the rest of Old Bridge, but boasts its own unique features, such as the Laurence Harbor Beach and the Old Bridge Waterfront Park, located along the Raritan Bayshore.

Laurence Harbor’s housing stock consists almost entirely of ranch-style and bungalow homes, offering cozy accommodations both inland and along the waterfront. A few American Foursquares and larger family homes can occasionally be found in Laurence Harbor, and most of the town’s homes are situated along quiet residential streets or along the bustling Route 35.

This community is sandwiched between the beach and the Bayshore’s largest preservation of nature at Cheesequake State Park. Cheesequake is locally popular for camping trips, picnics, fishing, and hiking, with 1,610 acres of woods and marshland. During the summer, many visitors choose to swim in its waters, while Canadian geese migrate here in the autumn. Boating enthusiasts can launch from the Raritan Marina and explore the nearby creeks, or enjoy some nautical relaxation in the Raritan Bay, with New York as a backdrop.

While Laurence Harbor is mostly residential, there are two local restaurants, each with high ratings. Lisa Restaurant & Pizzeria fills the archetypal Jersey Shore town’s cherished role of the “local pizza place,” serving both New York-style pizzas and Italian dishes such as spaghetti with meat sauce or penne alla vodka. The Anchor Fish & Chips, located along the Laurence Parkway, is a local to-go favorite, selling its signature fish and chips as well as other fried delights such as a blackened cod sandwich and fried mushrooms.

Laurence Harbor’s students attend Memorial Elementary School, Carl Sandburg Middle School, and Old Bridge High School, which has consistently ranked among the best high schools in the state and boasts strong soccer, track, and volleyball programs.

Laurence Harbor residents live in between the region’s two most important highways – the Garden State Parkway and Route 35. While the Garden State Parkway invites travelers to drive up to New York City in under an hour, Route 35 allows for beachgoers to access the popular beaches of Sandy Hook and Sea Bright in approximately half an hour, making summer adventures a simple drive away.

I feel most areas in New Jersey have some crime, this area has some noticeable crime, but the people and the police take good care of the situations.

Small quiet place to live. Most of the neighborhood are quiet and busy with their lives. There are two pharmacies, a gas station stores, Dunkin Donuts, and local restaurants and stores nearby. Groceries stories and malls are estimated minimum about 5-20 mins, depending on where you want to go. Elementary school is nearby and middle and high school are minimum for 10 mins, depending on where you live.

The area itself is very dirty and the people can get noisy. Other than that, it has some good convince stores and a nearby park.

There are many privately-owned small stores in the area, but not many big companies.
