Lake Shore combines lake access with suburban convenience

Located just south of sprawling Zorinsky Lake, Lake Shore is a quiet suburban pocket in Omaha that lives up to its name. Residents in this leafy neighborhood are within walking distance of the water and the trails and ball fields that surround it. They’re also a short drive away from the laundry list of stores, eateries and other businesses that line the lengthy thoroughfare of Q Street. And when the errands are done, or the lakeside activities are finished, Lake Shore residents get to return to their own slice of peace and quiet. “The big thing that stands out is the privacy that you have with your home. The lot sizes over there are decent-sized,” says local Realtor Jamal Rahmanzai of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, who has about seven years of real estate experience. “It’s just a very central, West Omaha location.”

Modern homes often come with fresh touches

The Lake Shore area is filled with New Traditional-style homes built in the 1990s and early 2000s. Options average about 2,700 square feet and feature attached garages. Rahmanzai says many have already received exterior or interior updates. Houses sit back from the neighborhood’s sidewalk-lined streets on tree-specked lots that are often around one-fifth of an acre. Properties sell for $330,000 to $550,000. Lake Shore also has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, which is significantly better than the national average of 4.

Many clubs and academies at area schools

The Millard Public Schools system serves this community and has an A rating from Niche. The district supports choice through magnet programs and transfer options both inside and outside the district. Applications are accepted annually, and placement is determined by available space and, when necessary, a lottery selection process. Students may start at Willowdale Elementary School, where the PTO organizes events, including Halloween parties and a movie night. Russell Middle School offers extracurricular activities like cooking and art clubs. Millard West High School offers academy programs focused on education and STEM. All three institutions have A grades.

Nearby lake is a hub for walks and water sports

Neighboring Zorinsky Lake spans about 255 acres and is surrounded by public green space. “It’s a nice, mature area with a lot of great walking trails,” Rahmanzai says, adding that paddleboarding and fishing are popular pastimes on the water. The Zorinsky Lake Trail around the perimeter is about 7 miles long. Many Lake Shore residents are a relatively short stroll away from some of the athletic fields and one of the playgrounds that fill the space just off the shore. Other outdoor attractions include Walnut Grove Park, where there’s another playground, a pond that’s open to fishing and a trail that connects to the Zorinsky Lake Trail.

From burgers to happy hour sushi, dining choices abound

Lake Shore residents have an assortment of commercial amenities at their disposal, located right around the corner on Q Street. “You’re very close to all your necessary items,” Rahmanzai says. “Food options are very vast.” Right across from the neighborhood, Q Street features spots like Hydes Slydes, serving up burgers, wraps, loaded fries and more. DJ's Dugout Sports Bar, about a mile away, is part of a local chain and has numerous TVs for watching games while enjoying wings and nachos. The bar is next to another area chain in Hiro 88, whose happy hour sushi and drink specials are popular. Both restaurants share a shopping plaza with a Hy-Vee supermarket, as well as larger chain eateries like McDonald’s, Godfather's Pizza and Scooter’s Coffee. There’s a Walgreens nearby, too. The Oak View Mall can take care of more retail needs, home to stores including Dillard’s, JCPenney and Finish Line.

Local festival is a summertime staple

The city of Omaha hosts a wide assortment of events each year, but Millard Days is particularly close to home for Lake Shore residents. The event spans about a week each August, at nearby Andersen Park. “There’s a fun carnival that goes on. A lot of activities,” Rahmanzai says. “They have a nice choreographed parade.”
