A calm community just north of Daytona Beach
Located in Ormond Beach, the original "Birthplace of Speed," Woodmere is a small riverfront community where, once a year, motorcyclists from around the world rally for Bike Week. For the remainder of the year, Ormond Beach resumes its quiet but active coastal-town vibe. Located just outside the bustling areas of Orlando and Daytona, residents of Woodmere aren't far from urban activity, but their position at the edge of the Halifax River and the shores of the Atlantic makes for leisurely days. Common recreational days include lounging at the beach, fishing, boating and walking along the area's coastal trails. Woodmere is also minutes from Tomoka State Park, so there's access to diverse ecological environments. What really makes Woodmere unique, though, is the community its residents have fostered. "The first thing I noticed when I moved here 20 years ago is that the people are just so friendly," says Realtor Michelle Cecchini of Shell Realty.

Spot wildlife at Tomoka State Park and bike The Loop along the beach
"Ormond, and Woodmere, are unique because you have the beach on the east side and then Tomoka State Park to the north," Cecchini says. "Tomoka is real, natural Florida. It's exactly what it looked like hundreds of years ago. You see all kinds of wildlife you wouldn't expect – deer, pigs, boars. I call it 'The Woods.'" Residents also enjoy "The Loop," a 30-mile biking-safe roadway that stretches from Tomoka State Park through Woodmere, over the Granada Bridge and to the beach of the Atlantic coast. For a more low-key outing, Sanchez Park features large trees contouring the Tomoka River, with full access to a boat ramp, covered picnic area and playground.

Ranch-style homes and bungalows
Three-bedroom ranch-style homes and minimalist bungalows typically cost between $250,000 to $450,000. Houses here are often painted in neutral hues, with the occasional vibrant orange or bright blue home thrown in the mix. While Woodmere is located along the Halifax River, it has relatively few riverfront properties, so when buyers encounter one, these listings go fast and prices trend between $700,000 and $1 million. "People come here to visit and end up wanting to buy property here," says Cecchini. "Our prices haven't gone down, and our inventory's low, so we can barely keep a house on the market for any real amount of time." The housing market here typically slows down in the fall and picks up in the winter months in anticipation of summer.

Staying busy in Ormond Beach
"People here really care about the community, so they get involved. Ormond Beach is a great place for people who like to stay busy," Cecchini says. For example, the Department of Leisure Services holds art, cooking, fitness and language classes for adults—plus musical theater and dance classes for kids. The Ormond Beach Historical Society holds monthly seminars on Florida history, while creatives enjoy the Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Gardens' free Saturday Art Walks. As the "Birthplace of Speed," Daytona's annual Bike Week celebration draws an estimated 400,000 visitors to central Florida each March. The event sees bikers rolling past Woodmere to let loose along The Loop, a scenic paved road accessible to both bicycles and motor vehicles.

Local dining and the Trails Shopping Center
The Trails Shopping Center features local shops like Lucy's Gift Boutique and J&B Jewelers alongside retail chains like Talbots, Chico's and White House Black Market. For groceries, most residents head to the nearby Publix or Winn-Dixie. There's plenty to choose for dining, from the casual seafood spot of Hull's, to the Cali-Mex dishes at Frida's. "But my favorite is the Ormond Garage," Cecchini says, referencing this restaurant housed in a former race-car garage. "People think racing started in Daytona, but it actually started in Ormond. They converted the original garage where they would keep the race cars into this cool burger and brewery spot. It's a piece of Ormond history."
