Convenience is sacred in Sacred Heart

Sacred Heart is a quiet, residential enclave just south of the Fox River. The neighborhood is conveniently close to the Interstate 41 corridor, a mile to the west, and a significant asset for commuters. “It’s definitely a priority for the people who need it,” says Stephanie Brehmer, an Oshkosh native and Realtor with First Weber Realtors. “For anyone who works outside the city, the interstate is a feature that grabs their attention.” Walkable parks and nearby schools contribute to Sacred Heart’s convenient setup. Big-box shops and fast-food franchises are located off the interstate, but folks can also patronize a few locally owned cafes and shops in the neighborhood. With downtown 2 miles to the east, residents can easily travel across the various drawbridges to reach jobs or businesses on the other side of the Fox River.

Mix of traditional and midcentury home styles

Telephone poles line the residential streets of Sacred Heart, where midcentury homes vary in style from traditional architecture to bungalows. Out front, sidewalks and road verges sprout newly planted trees, part of an effort to expand the city’s Urban Tree Canopy and beautify the neighborhood. Beyond the rooftops, residents might catch a glimpse of the towering St. Jude the Apostle Parish. Homes surrounding Knapp Street have a full view of the parish, which predates the community by nearly 30 years. Most residences feature detached garages, driveways and modest yards. Prices range from $100,000 to $285,000 — slightly below average in Oshkosh.

Walking to Stoegbauer Park

Stoegbauer Park is within walking distance of some homes. It is a community green space on Idaho Street featuring a playground, baseball field and basketball court. But those seeking a broader range of amenities can head to South Park, less than a mile down the street. “The park was recently renovated,” Brehmer says. “They added more water features and stocked the pond, so it’s great for fishing. There are these beautiful walking trails, and it's just a really nice place, kind of in the middle of the south side.” These paved paths are woven throughout, connecting the ball courts, playground and pavilions to the fishing ponds at the park’s heart. Many fishermen, however, opt to cast out at William A. Steiger Park. Featuring two launch sites and a popular casting dock, Steiger has been a go-to fishing spot for years.

Public and private schooling in Oshkosh

Families are zoned for the Oshkosh Area School District, beginning at Franklin Elementary. Less than a mile west on Fifth Avenue, Franklin earns a B-minus on Niche and provides on-site before- and after-school care through the Oshkosh YMCA. Perry Tipler Middle School shares a campus with the Advanced Learning Program (ALP) Charter School. Earning a B-minus, the school requires an application process for students enrolling in the fast-paced charter program. Oshkosh West High School earns a B-plus. The school’s swimming pool, three gymnasiums and auditorium accommodate extracurriculars, including athletics and music. Lourdes Academy is a B-plus-rated private, spiritual option enrolling grades kindergarten through 12th grade. The academy provides its own roster of athletic leagues, including a football team that plays at the J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium along the Fox River.

St. Jude the Apostle Parish is a local landmark

The community landmark, St. Jude the Apostle Parish, is a towering stone structure built in the early 20th century. It sits on the corner of Knapp and Sixth Street. In 2025, the adjoining Sacred Heart School was demolished. A new Catholic Education Center and Parish Hall will be built on the site.

Two miles from Interstate 41

Residents of Sacred Heart live just 2 miles east of I-41 — convenient for commuters heading north into the Fox Cities. “In Oshkosh, we don’t have a bypass that makes it convenient to jump interstates,” Brehmer says. “You’re either traveling through the city or hopping on 41.” To reach the downtown scene, residents can take one of four drawbridges across the Fox River. Most opt for the Bascule Bridge, which provides a straight shot to Main Street. “In the summer, you have to plan for extra commute time because it’ll take another 15 minutes to cross those bridges,” she continues. Residents can get around by bus using the GO Transit stops along the north and south ends of the neighborhood on Witzel and Ninth avenues. Aurora Medical Center Oshkosh is about 3 miles north. Though Wittman Regional Airport is a mile south, most residents opt to fly out of Appleton International Airport, 22 miles north.

Big-box stops and small businesses within walking distance

Living within a couple of miles of Interstate 41 means Sacred Heart residents are close to the thoroughfare’s offerings, including a Walmart Supercenter and Fleet Farm. Big-box shops like Aldi, Target and Pick ‘n Save are 2 miles south, neighboring casual eats and retailers like Petco and Goodwill. But coffee, donuts and sandwiches are within walking distance at Thunderbird Bakery & Café, a new addition to the intersection of Sixth Avenue and Knapp Street. Originally a vendor at the Oshkosh Farmer’s Market, Thunderbird opened its first brick-and-mortar bake shop in 2023. Jeff’s on Rugby attracts happy hour regulars throughout the week, serving pub grub in the form of burgers and fresh fish sandwiches. “The owner is a fantastic chef,” Brehmer says. “It’s a great neighborhood restaurant that cares about the community with regular patrons and great reviews.”

Front row seats to EAA AirVenture

Wittman Regional Airport is located a mile south of Sacred Heart, meaning residents get a front-row seat to the annual swarm of Experimental Aircraft Association AirVenture attendees. Considered the world's largest gathering of aviation enthusiasts, AirVenture features air shows, workshops and interactive displays held throughout the week — attracting around 750,000 people every year. “Our population triples during EAA,” says Eric Lichterman, a local Realtor with Century 21 Ace Realty. “I live on that side of town, so we get fighter jets flying over our house all day long. After about 30 rounds of flyovers, your windows start to rattle.” Less hectic is the Oshkosh Farmer’s Market, held every Saturday morning from June through October. There, guests peruse over 150 vendors selling local produce and handmade crafts on Main Street. During the off-season, the city hosts an indoor market at the Oshkosh Arena with around 30 weekly vendors.
