Known for coastal charm
Bordered by a port and a harbor, Silver Strand has seaside charm and community spirit. It's not uncommon to find military personnel renting houses by the base. Still, homebuyers select the neighborhood for its coastal access. "It has great surfing. The area is known for a young and active beach lifestyle," says Meggie Hawthorne, a Keller Williams West Ventura County Realtor. "There are some new families in the area who are getting acclimated to living by the sea, but many long-time residents are there for the fishing, surfing and kayaking alone." Decent schools and local watering holes are just the cherry on top of the already impressive area, and annual events bring the residents together to share their love of the community.

A day out on the water
Walter B. Moranda Park is to the east of the neighborhood, where people can play a game of tennis, basketball or pickleball. The playground and green space also get plenty of attention, but families wanting a day at the beach can head to Kiddle Beach. The waves are less intense than Silver Strand Beach's, and it's a "Really popular spot for families. It's also getting a major revamp soon to clean it up and add parking," Hawthorne says. The most compelling feature of Silver Strand is undoubtedly Silver Strand State Beach. The pristine stretch of coastline is a haven for surfers, swimmers and kayakers. However, it's not just about beach activities; it's a place where many locals appreciate the rhythm of the waves and the smell of the salty air.

Decorating golf carts and coming together
"People gather regularly, and events aren't just limited to the locals. It's common to see golf carts in the area, so a few events highlight them," Hawthorne says. "Every fall, there is a put-put tournament where houses can sign up to make mini-golf holes on their driveways. People then decorate their carts and drive house-to-house to play in the tournament." The Fourth of July and wintertime "Parade of Lights" also allow residents to decorate and gather with the friendly and welcoming community.
A walk to local restaurants and a drive to big stores
The area is almost entirely residential, but there are a few restaurants that bring it some charm. The Strandwich, for example, serves the best breakfast burritos and brisket sandwiches in town. When locals want to grab a beer after working up a thirst from surfing, Beachcomber Tavern offers a display of craft beers along with dart boards and giant Jenga. According to Hawthorne, "It's a cool spot. It's hidden on the area's residential streets, so it has a speakeasy vibe." Besides a few small grocers and retailers in Seabridge Marketplace and Mandalay Village Marketplace, residents must drive north of Oxnard to shop. But they don't seem to mind. "Living in Silver Strand is not like going to a buffet meal where you can get a little bit of everything. People live there specifically for the beach lifestyle or to be close to Port Hueneme."
The Strandwich is a local staple in the Silver Strand neighborhood.

Tall houses of every style along the beach
Sizes vary in the neighborhood; however, almost every home sits on top of a private garage. Residents may have different tastes in style, from 1970s Cape Cods to Art Deco mansions, but one thing they all have in common is a love for the beach. "It's divided into two areas. There are beachfront properties and then houses in Hollywood by the Sea. A lot of those homes are rented, especially by military personnel who work at Port Hueneme," Hawthorne notes. Ranging between $900,000 and $3 million, every house is a short walk from the sand. Sidewalks are nonexistent on the residential streets, but with Victoria Ave as the only road leading to the neighborhood, traffic is rare, and the quiet streets make for a nice evening walk under the West Coast sunset.

Getting around “The Strand”
Silver Strand has no transit, but a handy shuttle operates from Oxnard Airport heading to LAX. "The airport doesn't have public flights, but the shuttle is so convenient for those not wanting to deal with traffic or parking while flying out of LAX," Hawthorne says. She continues, "It's a young and active area that tends to be more noisy than other neighborhoods nearby. Residents can even hear morning taps at 8:00 am coming from the port daily." Community Memorial Hospital is 10 miles north of the neighborhood in Downtown Oxnard, and many residents commute downtown for work.
Silver Strand does not have public transit however the Oxnard Transit Center is 10 minutes way.
