Fishtown
Hip local restaurants and shops
The growing restaurant scene has made Fishtown a haven for multicultural dining, with most restaurants located along Frankford and Girard avenues. Fishtown is home to several renowned restaurants, including Suraya, an elegant Lebanese Café, well known for its chai latte and flavorful Levant dishes. The trendiness of Fishtown is also captured at La Colombe Coffee Roasters, where locals can grab a craft coffee with friends in a rustic industrial atmosphere. Many restaurants have been converted from old buildings, including Frankford Hall, which transformed from an abandoned building with no roof to a German beer garden, and Mulherin’s, which offers Italian cuisine in a 1900s whiskey distillery. The neighborhood’s many gastropubs add to the vibrant nightlife of Fishtown, like Evil Genius Beer Company, known for throwing block parties on Front Street, and Johnny Brenda’s, an energetic spot with local beer, American food and live music from regional and nationally touring indie artists.Shopping in Fishtown is no different than the dining experience. It’s all local, just the way residents like it. “Everything that you really need to do is right there,” says Abe Thomson, an agent with Keller Williams Philly who specializes in Fishtown real estate, “You don’t have to go out of Fishtown to get things done.” Riverwards is Fishtown’s main grocery store. There’s also Castellino’s, a popular Italian market offering imported and domestic Italian foods and hoagies to go. Locals can shop from several boutiques and other various shops around the neighborhood as well.
Art, music and festivals are a way of life
The Fishtown community has a deep appreciation for the arts. The local artistry is put on display in several galleries around the neighborhood. Music fans can hit up a bar to watch local musicians or get tickets to see their favorite bands at The Fillmore. Those in need of a good laugh can head to Punch Line Philly, one of the city’s most popular comedy clubs. Neighborhood events are also a common occurrence, like the Fishtown Fall Feastivale, where Frankford Avenue is shut down to a sea of people enjoying local food, beer and live music.Modern and century-old rowhouses
Residents will find themselves in either a classic Philadelphia-style rowhouse built in the early 1900s or a contemporary rowhouse. Homes in need of renovations typically range from $175,000 to $200,000. Early-1900s rowhouses that are move-in ready can range from 700 to 4,000 square feet, selling for $250,000 to $1.5 million, depending on the size of the home and the scope of renovations. Fishtown’s newer rowhouses come with sleek contemporary designs and rooftop patios. Some come with views of the Center City skyline and/or the Delaware River, ranging from $450,000 to $2 million. Some newer rowhouses come with attached garages. However, most homes require street parking.Respite by the river at Penn Treaty Park
Penn Treaty Park is the neighborhood’s local green space. It’s where William Penn came to a peace agreement with the Lenape Indians who once occupied the land. The riverside park is a peaceful area to walk along trails, relax in open fields and fish from the rocky coastline with views of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge. Early birds can relax at the park while soaking in views of the sunrise from across the river behind New Jersey on the other side.Middle and high school collaboration at Penn Treaty School
Kindergarten through eighth-grade students on the south side of town attend Alexander Adaire School, graded a C-plus by Niche. On the north side, kindergarten through fifth-grade students go to Horatio B. Hackett School, which also gets a C-plus. All students go on to C-plus-graded Penn Treaty School, which serves as a middle and high school. Though two schools under one roof, Penn Treaty strives to incorporate both, including the Relationship First Program, where high schoolers can work with the counselor to mentor middle schoolers.Access to I-95 and SEPTA buses, trains and trolleys
Commuters enjoy the convenient transportation options in Fishtown. Locals can drive right onto Interstate 95, which runs directly through the neighborhood. SEPTA offers bus routes throughout the entire neighborhood and surrounding areas. SEPTA’s blue line train runs on elevated tracks, aka “The El,” which commuters can take for a 10-minute ride to Center City. SEPTA also has a trolley line that runs from Fishtown to West Philadelphia.
