Formerly home to early settler fishermen along the Delaware River, Fishtown isn’t quite for anglers anymore, as it’s a rapidly growing community with a booming arts and culinary scene. “I’ve seen the progression in Fishtown, and it’s overwhelmingly charming,” says Ariel Morgenstein, associate broker for JG Real Estate, who was on the zoning committee for the Fishtown Neighbors Association from 2018 to 2022. “You walk down the street, and you know that people love the fact that they live there. Everyone has signs with fish on their homes and people just take great care of the neighborhood.” Regarded as one of the “coolest hipster neighborhoods” in the country by TripAdvisor, Fishtown appeals to those looking to live within walking distance of bars, gastropubs, cafes, restaurants and entertainment venues that draw in large crowds all day and night. While the neighborhood is primarily made up of early 1900s rowhouses, the popularity of Fishtown has led to a surge in new rowhouse construction. “There are always multiple streets closed because of the construction,” says Morgenstein. “But there’s just as much growth as there is beautification to the neighborhood to make it a better place to live.”

Hip local restaurants and shops
The growing restaurant scene has made Fishtown a haven for multicultural dining, with most restaurants located along Frankford and Girard avenues. Fishtown is home to several renowned restaurants, including Suraya, an elegant Lebanese Café, well known for its chai latte and flavorful Levant dishes. The trendiness of Fishtown is also captured at La Colombe Coffee Roasters, where locals can grab a craft coffee with friends in a rustic industrial atmosphere. Many restaurants have been converted from old buildings, including Frankford Hall, which transformed from an abandoned building with no roof to a German beer garden, and Mulherin’s, which offers Italian cuisine in a 1900s whiskey distillery. The neighborhood’s many gastropubs add to the vibrant nightlife of Fishtown, like Evil Genius Beer Company, known for throwing block parties on Front Street, and Johnny Brenda’s, an energetic spot with local beer, American food and live music from regional and nationally touring indie artists.
Shopping in Fishtown is no different than the dining experience. It’s all local, just the way residents like it. “Everything that you really need to do is right there,” says Abe Thomson, an agent with Keller Williams Philly who specializes in Fishtown real estate, “You don’t have to go out of Fishtown to get things done.” Riverwards is Fishtown’s main grocery store. There’s also Castellino’s, a popular Italian market offering imported and domestic Italian foods and hoagies to go. Locals can shop from several boutiques and other various shops around the neighborhood as well.

Modern and century-old rowhouses
Residents will find themselves in either a classic Philadelphia-style rowhouse built in the early 1900s or a contemporary rowhouse. Homes in need of renovations typically range from $175,000 to $200,000. Early-1900s rowhouses that are move-in ready can range from 700 to 4,000 square feet, selling for $250,000 to $1.5 million, depending on the size of the home and the scope of renovations. Fishtown’s newer rowhouses come with sleek contemporary designs and rooftop patios. Some come with views of the Center City skyline and/or the Delaware River, ranging from $450,000 to $2 million. Some newer rowhouses come with attached garages. However, most homes require street parking.

Respite by the river at Penn Treaty Park
Penn Treaty Park is the neighborhood’s local green space. It’s where William Penn came to a peace agreement with the Lenape Indians who once occupied the land. The riverside park is a peaceful area to walk along trails, relax in open fields and fish from the rocky coastline with views of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge. Early birds can relax at the park while soaking in views of the sunrise from across the river behind New Jersey on the other side.
