A charming South Pittsburgh suburb
Folks are keeping an eye on Carrick, a neighborhood for people who want the best of both worlds: peaceful residential life and big-city adventures. This sprawling community can be found on the south side of Pittsburgh, less than 5 miles from downtown. Its narrow streets climb Pennsylvanian hills, lined by sidewalks and parallel parked cars. “Compared to other Pittsburgh neighborhoods, the homes are affordable,” says Realtor Sancha Rai from Team Sancha Man and Sharon Gurung. “And they’re quite charming. Older and charming.” With its own parks, community hubs and shopping area, Carrick is a strong choice for living in the Steel City.

Phillips Park
There are a couple of green spaces in Carrick, putting outdoor recreation and relaxation within walking distance of many properties. Phillips Park is the neighborhood’s largest green space. Its dense woods make it a gorgeous hub in the fall when the leaves turn shades of red, orange and yellow. This park is home to multiple playgrounds, a disc golf course, scenic trails and overlooks. Due north, Volunteers Field is a smaller spot, ideal for practicing pitches with its three ballfields.

Along Brownsville Road
Brownsville Road is Carrick’s main street, lined by some shopping options and local watering holes. Options for grabbing groceries include Shop ‘n Save and Uni-Mart. Carrick Inn has bar bites, good drinks and even better company. Local bookworms can enjoy peace and quiet at the neighborhood’s branch of the Carnegie Library, a huge community resource for the Pittsburgh area. And, still off Brownsville Road, the Carrick Community Pavilion is a huge outdoor venue that hosts farmers markets in the summer and fall, food trucks, live music, flea markets and other community events.

PRT buses and Denise T Station
“Carrick’s a suburban area, but it’s near city facilities and attractions,” Rai says. “It’s nice for people who use public transportation to get to downtown.” PRT bus stops can be found up and down Brownsville Road, and the Denise T Station is in the neighborhood as well, so carless commutes are a breeze for residents. As for those driving, Route 51 borders Carrick’s west side and connects to the Liberty Tunnels less than 2 miles up the road. Commutes to and from downtown are typically less than 5-mile trips.
