Central Oakland hums with a youthful spirit
The Oakland neighborhood is known as Pittsburgh's healthcare and academic center, thanks to the universities and hospitals surrounding it, including the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). And thanks to the many students who live in the neighborhood, Central Oakland is bustling with a youthful energy. "It has a big college town feel because of its proximity to the universities," says Maria DePasquale, a Realtor with RE/MAX Select Realty. DePasquale was born and raised in Pittsburgh and has been selling real estate for over 27 years. "The kids can walk to class, which is a big draw. The restaurants there are geared towards them. It's really bustling during the months when school is in session, and then it gets quiet in the summers."

Locals flock to Divvy's and Viva Los Tacos
Divvy Coffee & Buns is well-loved in the neighborhood for dining out. "It's the perfect spot for bunch or a light lunch. Their salads are amazing," says Krista Lorenzo, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty and a Pittsburgh resident. "The vibe is really cool because you'll see the students there studying." Lorenzo also recommends Viva Los Tacos off Forbes Avenue for its fresh guacamole and margaritas, and Lucca in nearby North Oakland for its upscale Italian dishes and wine selection. Running errands can be tricky within the neighborhood, but residents head into nearby Squirrel Hill to Giant Eagle for groceries and pick up essentials at Target, located off Smithfield Street close to downtown.
