An established neighborhood in the East End

Just south of the Allegheny River, Morningside began as a streetcar suburb that saw a development boom in the early 1900s following the construction of a streetcar line along Chislett Street. Today, the established neighborhood offers a quiet residential enclave whose sense of community is over a century in the making. “My husband was born and raised in Morningside, and his family came here from Italy in the 1960s. We ended up buying his grandmother’s house, and we’ve been there for about 10 years,” says Brandi Cugini, a Realtor with Howard Hanna Real Estate Services. “We love living here. You know all your neighbors, and it’s very walkable. People are always out walking with their dogs or sitting on their front porches with their kids.” While Morningside is primarily residential, the neighborhood has a small business district with a smattering of shops and restaurants. “It has all of the main conveniences that you need, and those places really bring the neighborhood together,” Cugini says. In addition to its sidewalk-lined streets and local businesses, the neighborhood boasts a central location in the East End with proximity to the trendy communities of Highland Park, Lawrenceville and East Liberty, which are less than 5 miles away. “We’re kind of nestled between those neighborhoods, and Morningside is really just a little sliver that’s convenient to everything. It’s just got everything that a neighborhood needs,” Cugini says.

Homes include two-story cottages and American Foursquares

Most homes in Morningside were built from the turn of the 20th century through the mid-1900s. The neighborhood is densely populated by a mix of two-story cottages, Dutch Colonial Revivals, colonial-inspired bungalows and American Foursquares with brick exteriors. Most properties sit side-by-side on narrow lots and feature columned front porches, detached garages and side yard driveways. Cugini notes that while Morningside has long been considered a more affordable alternative to East End communities like Highland Park, Lawrenceville and East Liberty, home prices are increasing alongside the neighborhood’s rising popularity. “We used to call it our best-kept secret, but a lot of people have gotten pushed out of the neighborhoods that are right next door, which is causing an influx of people buying in the neighborhood,” she says. “There were nine offers on a house I sold this year, and the prices keep increasing.” Home prices typically range from $230,000 for smaller properties to $480,000 for houses with recent renovations. “Before Highland Park was the destination for young professionals, but now Morningside is the go-to for young professionals buying their first houses,” says Nate Nieland, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty and a lifelong Pittsburgh resident. “You can get the most bang for your buck there.” There are also some multi-family homes in the southern half of Morningside, which sell for $200,000 to $400,000.

Local eateries include The Bulldog Pub

There are a handful of restaurants and shops in the northern half of the neighborhood. Ka-Fair Coffee & Cakery serves small bites alongside locally roasted coffee, and the Thai-inspired café provides plenty of seating with a cozy leather couch and bench topped with pillows. Eddie’s Pizza Haus is just down the street, and the takeout spot has been serving the community since 1981. The Bulldog Pub provides a neighborhood watering hole where memorabilia from the Manchester United Football Club covers the walls. “They’ve gotten really busy, especially for soccer,” Cugini says. “If you drive past here on a Sunday, the garage doors are open, and people are out on the sidewalk early in the morning.” Local businesses like Hairstyles by Lisa and Pixie Hair & Nail Salon serve the community, while Rite Aid sells the essentials. Firecracker Fabrics sits next to Cut & Sew Studio, which hosts sewing classes and private lessons for all ages. East Liberty is about 3 miles away, and the neighborhood provides access to chain retailers such as Home Depot, Target, Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods.

Morningside offers access to Highland Park and youth sports leagues

The expansive Highland Park borders Morningside to the east. The 377-acre green space features various athletic facilities, playgrounds and nature trails surrounding its two reservoirs. Ducks frequent the reservoirs during warmer months, and more animals can be seen year-round at the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium. The zoo is home to over 8,000 animals from around the world, including roaring lions and waddling penguins. “On a quiet day, we can hear the animals at the zoo. Especially the sea lions,” Cugini says. Next to Highland Park, Natoli Field offers an outdoor sports complex with ballfields, soccer pitches, a fieldhouse and a playground. The complex is also home to youth sports organizations like Morningside Soccer. A bit further south is Heth’s Park, which has a tennis court, playground and several ballfields used by the Morningside Girls Softball Association. The park sits in the southern half of Heth’s Run, a 60-acre green space covering a former stream valley that now serves as a sewershed. The area is historically prone to sewer overflow, and groups like the Heth’s Run Watershed Task Force are working to improve its stormwater infrastructure.

Pittsburgh Regional Transit offers local bus service

While the East End tends to be less hilly than the rest of the city, Morningside has eight flights of city steps that connect residents to public transportation and neighboring communities like Highland Park and Stanton Heights. Pittsburgh Regional Transit provides local bus service to the neighborhood, with several stops along its main streets. Pennsylvania Route 8 runs along the northern edge of Morningside, and the highway provides access to nearby thoroughfares such as Interstate 376. Downtown Pittsburgh is less than 10 miles from Morningside, while Pittsburgh International Airport is about a 24-mile drive away. The neighborhood also offers proximity to several hospitals, including UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, UPMC Shadyside and West Penn Hospital, all of which are less than 5 miles away.

Neighborhood events and festivities at St. Raphael’s Church

The Morningside Area Community Council hosts community events throughout the year. In October, Fall-O-Ween invites residents to put on their best costumes and head to the Bulldog Pub for a night full of food, drinks and family-friendly activities like face painting and pumpkin decorating. Summer brings a porch concert series to the neighborhood, while August marks the annual Morningside Community Block Party at Natoli Field. A bit further south is St. Raphael Church, where the Feast of St. Rocco has led a procession through Morningside each year since 1980. The feast celebrates the patron saint of St. Rocco and includes live music, a dazzling firework display and more. Behind the church are the Morningside Community Garden and the John DelSignore Bocce Courts, where the neighborhood’s bocce league has competed since 1990. “There’s a waitlist for that,” Cugini says. “There are some younger people on it, but for the most part, it’s the older Italians that still live in the neighborhood.”

The neighborhood is pretty quiet, and not as racially segregated as many of the neighborhoods in Pittsburgh, though it's still disproportionately white. Some of the neighbors are very touchy about dogs being on or near their yards, so be careful of that.
