Residential area along Columbia River
Located on the south bank of the Columbia River, Argay is a residential and industrial community in northeast Portland. First developed as a residential area in the 1950s, Argay has retained its suburban character. Putting down roots in Argay is a convenient choice for those working at Portland International Airport, Frito-Lay, The Boeing Company and Linfield University’s Portland campus; these hubs of employment are all just a few streets over from the community.
Colonial Revivals, split-levels and ranch-style homes in northeast Portland
The neighborhood is divided along Sandy Boulevard, with the northern half primarily—but not exclusively—used for airport-related commercial space. Along residential streets, young trees and manicured curbs line sidewalks. Some roads have a slight incline. Most houses are midcentury ranch-styles or split-levels, though there are a fair number of Colonial Revival-style homes as well. Most homes are on the market for $470,000 to $530,000. There are some apartments in the area and Argay Terrace Community serves those 55 and older.

Recreation in Northeast Portland
Like most of Northeast Portland, Argay doesn’t have the big-ticket greenspaces the westside is known for. However, residents can walk or bike to Argay City Park and Luuwit View Park, the latter of which also has spots designated for dogs and skating. Cyclists can hop on the riverside bike trail and boaters can cross the Columbia River to Government Island State Recreation Area, home to two docks and some of the prettiest trails in Portland. Government Island is also accessible via Interstate 205.
The Luuwit Park walkway features art in the center of the path.

Northeast Portland's contributions to the foodie scene
“Portland is known as a foodie city with unique neighborhoods,” says Mary Peterson, a resident of northeast Portland for the past 25 years. And Argay has some of the most well-loved restaurants in northeast Portland, including the iconic Wooden Chicken Pub, and the low-key but beloved Sa Bai Thai. Bistro 23 pairs farm-to-table dishes with inventive cocktails and regional wines. Additionally, a popular video-game-themed brewery, Level Beer, features arcade games and a kids' area. “That’s what makes Portland unique: its food scene,” Peterson says. “And that hasn’t changed since the pandemic. It has continued to thrive.”
Get immersed in Argay's arts & shopping
When residents aren’t trying out new cuisines, they can get immersed in the creative community. For example, volunteers at Portland Art Guild teach art to locals, prioritizing affordability. For groceries, residents can head to Costco. For more shopping, there are a few strip malls on Sandy Boulevard. Locals looking for big-box shopping can head down the road to Cascade Station, one of the largest malls in town with a variety of major department stores, including Ikea, Target and Ulta.
Minutes from Portland International Airport & I-205
Cascade Station and Portland International Airport are located on the other side of I-205, which is just a few minutes’ drive from Argay. The MAX light rail lines don’t currently extend into Argay, but TriMet bus routes 21 and 22 make stops in the area. Interstate 84 is easily accessible, which takes residents into downtown Portland, 11 miles away. Argay contains Concentra Urgent Care and the hospital at Providence Portland Medical Center serves the area, 6 miles away. On the other side of the river from this established neighborhood lies Washington state.

Argay is a very nice neighborhood to live in. It's close to lots of grocery stores, as well as the airport. However, most neighbors don't tend to interact much and mostly keep to themselves, so it's not always the most social place. Regardless, people still tend to be super nice and welcoming.
