South Punta Gorda
Master planned developments are spurring growth
The area has a collection of planned subdivisions, with more to come. The up-and-coming Willow community by Lennar Homes will bring about 1,000 new properties and shared amenities such as a resort-style pool, fitness center and pickleball courts within the next five or six years. The project will include homes from 1,400 to about 3,200 square feet, ranging from about $300,000 to $600,000. Burnt Store Meadows is a more established, deed-restricted community with Florida-style homes from the 1990s, '00s and new construction. They can range from $250,000 to about $600,000. The community is known for its low annual HOA fee and park-like greenbelts behind the homes.Restaurants and events in the historic downtown waterfront
Waterfront dining, sunset views, events and local businesses are the highlights in downtown Punta Gorda. "You can walk pretty much anywhere. There's a huge farmers' market, and lots of stuff happening all the time," Mendez says. The dining scene centers around seafood, often enjoyed with live music and harbor views. TT's offers a tiki bar ambience with specialty drinks and a sandy artificial beach by the water. The menu features fried seafood, tacos and burgers. There are also well-loved spots for Italian, Greek, German and Irish food. Big box stores are also closer to home. Aldi, Walmart Supercenter, Publix, and Home Depot are all in the neighborhood. The downtown farmers market brings fruits, vegetables, homemade pasta, arts and crafts, and other local foods every Saturday morning. Fisherman's Village, a waterfront mall downtown, is also an even hub hosting a Day of Celtic Music in March, a Fourth of July Fireworks display, an International Culture Fest in October and a Festival of Lights in December. The city celebrates its dining scene at the Seafood & Music Festival, featuring an arts and crafts marketplace, live performances and fresh catches cooked on site.Public school options through Charlotte County
Charlotte County Public Schools serves the neighborhood. The assigned schools include East Elementary, which gets a B-plus from Niche, and Punta Gorda Middle, which earns a B. Charlotte High School earns a B-plus and offers Advanced Placement and dual enrollment classes. It also offers Cambridge University's Advanced International Certificate of Education program, another way for students to earn early college credits and qualify for scholarships.Fishing, beaches and city parks in Punta Gorda
Waterfront activities are a highlight for Punta Gorda, located on Florida's second-largest estuary. The ecosystem supports a thriving fishing scene, especially at the Boca Grande Pass, considered the tarpon fishing capital of the world. Anglers can catch 90- to 130-pound fish during the peak season. Public beaches line the coastal islands. Outdoor enthusiasts also enjoy the city parks. Gilchrist and Laishley Parks are two of the most popular, with pathways along the downtown waterfront. Gilchrist also features a playground and basketball, tennis and pickleball courts.Convenient routes for commuters and pedestrians
Commuters have convenient highway access in and out of town. U.S. Highway 41 is a direct route to downtown Punta Gorda. The route also has a separate asphalt pathway for pedestrians. Interstate 75 is within easy reach to get to Sarasota, about 60 miles north, and Fort Myers, about 20 miles south. The tourist season from December to April can cause traffic in town. Charlotte County doesn't have fixed bus routes but offers on-demand, curb-to-curb rides. Punta Gorda Airport is in the area and serves about 50 nonstop domestic routes. It may cause noticeable noise for residents nearby.City working to address flooding
Flooding can be an issue for Punta Gorda, including South Punta Gorda. The west side, closer to the coast, may be more susceptible. The main flood risk is during hurricane season from June 1 to November 30. "The city is working on trying to find some solutions to it," Mendez says.
