Flushing-Willets Point acts as Flushing’s downtown

Flushing-Willets Point is the lively commercial center of the Flushing community in Queens. Crowds exit the subway station on Main Street and roam down sidewalks, passing rows of restaurants and shopfronts, along with produce stands on the corners. This busy, and sometimes noisy, neighborhood is often called Flushing’s downtown. Visitors come for the robust selection of restaurants, particularly Chinese eateries, but its dense layout and subway station make it a popular choice for residents who want a walkable lifestyle.

Condos ranging from simple units to luxury communities

Though it’s a renter-heavy neighborhood, Flushing-Willets Point also has condos and co-ops for sale in its high-rise buildings. Many of the newest condo communities come with high-end perks such as concierge services and rooftop terraces. The older communities have fewer amenities, but they’re often closest to the subway station. Prices vary widely. One-bedroom units in midcentury complexes start in the lower $200,000s, but prices climb to the lower $900,000s for a one-bedroom condo in a modern luxury building. Newer condos with two or more bedrooms have sold from the upper $600,000s to $1.4 million. Homeowners also often pay hundreds of dollars per month in condo association fees.

Chinatown features Michelin-recognized restaurants

Flushing is home to New York City’s biggest Chinatown district, and it’s centered in Flushing-Willets Point. Nearly every block is jam packed with Chinese restaurants and cafes. The Michelin Guide even recognizes a few spots, such as Alley 41. Cuisine isn’t limited to Chinese dishes. Other fare found in the neighborhood includes:

  • Japanese cloud bread at Tous les Jours
  • Korean short rib soup at Woodam
  • Sushi at Akino
  • Vietnamese coffee at Caphê Ðen
There’s also a variety of stores specializing in Asian groceries and ingredients, including corner stores, seafood markets and H Mart supermarket. “Many people love going [to the neighborhood] for the produce and the fish,” says Wayne Rose, a Flushing-based associate broker at Century Homes Realty Group.

A shopping hub with malls and big-box stores

Redevelopment of the neighborhood has boosted its retail scene, Rose says: “We’re seeing commercial properties converted to mixed-use with shopping on the ground floor and condos above it.” A prime example is The Shops at SkyView, a mall underneath condo towers. The shopping complex features fashion brands and big-box stores such as Adidas, Coach, Target and BJ’s. Dozens of other stores are spread throughout the neighborhood. There’s a Macy’s on one block, and clothing boutiques and high-end watch and jewelry shops on others.

Recreation at Flushing Meadows Corona Park and Willets Point

Interstate 678 separates the neighborhood from Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens’ largest park and the site of two world’s fairs. The nearly 900-acre park is a hub for recreation and culture. Things to do include:

  • Watching a play or open mic performance at Queens Theatre
  • Rideingthe Cobra Coaster at Fantasy Forest Amusement Park
  • Seeing a puma, sea lion and other animals at the Queens Zoo
  • Biking past the park’s iconic sculptures, such as the Unisphere
The park is also home to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, which draws more than a million people to Flushing when it hosts the U.S. Open. The tennis center is just one of the area’s sports venues. To the north, the New York Mets play at Citi Field. Next door, Etihad Park is under construction and, when finished in 2027, will be the home of the New York City FC professional soccer team. Both stadiums sit on Willets Point, another part of Flushing undergoing changes. “The Willets Point section used to have lots of junkyards. That’s all being redeveloped,” Rose says. “There’s need for hotels. You see them built all over Flushing where the zoning permits.”

Connect to Manhattan by subway or the Long Island Rail Road

The neighborhood’s dense layout and abundance of shops and restaurants make it one of the most walkable parts of Flushing. Living a car-free lifestyle is made easier by the Flushing-Main Street station. From there, you can take the Long Island Rail Road or the No. 7 train to Manhattan. It’s a roughly 20-minute ride on the former and nearly a 40-minute trip on the latter. A bus picks up passengers at the station and shuttles them to LaGuardia Airport, about 3 miles away, for free. It’s also easy to hop on Interstate 678, Interstate 495 or Northern Boulevard. However, the 10-mile drive to Manhattan can take over an hour.
