Golf community curling along the Neuse River

A serene golfing community featuring clubhouse amenities within walking and biking distance, Hedingham offers a country club lifestyle without high home prices and exclusivity. “It’s very calming,” says Taylor Oldham, Realtor with Choice Residential Real Estate and a former resident of the neighborhood. “Being so close to the city, we loved the neighborhood because it was kind of a little escape. But you can still get to Downtown Raleigh, or anywhere, basically." That's because the neighborhood is tucked between Interstate 440 — or "The Beltline," locally — and I-540, the more outer loop. The neighborhood has traditionally had many long-time residents, but Oldham says she is seeing a shift to more first-time homebuyers and young families moving into the area.

Prices that attract first time buyers

Most of the properties here are newer, with the majority of them being built between the early 1990s to early 2000s. A large subdivision, the neighborhood consists of narrow streets lined with multiple sets of townhouses as well as single-family homes that back up to the golf course or offer a view of Foxcroft Lake. Each home is a little bit different: Some are in the “snout house” style, with large two-door garages front and center, or traditional architecture with front-facing gables. A two-bedroom townhouse will start at $230,000, while a five-bedroom single-family home can go for around $500,000. “With the price points, it’s a great opportunity for first-time homebuyers,” Oldham says. “The lots aren’t huge, so there’s not a whole lot of yard maintenance.”

Golf cart cruising through the neighborhood

Hedingham Golf Club is the neighborhood’s recreational center, where members of the club enjoy an 18-hole golf course and meals at the Grill and Snack Bar. “We would go out to the driving range,” Oldham says. “There’s access to the Greenway trails, so we would go walk and ride bikes through the neighborhood. We had a golf cart we would drive through the area.” The athletics club also offers swimming pools, fitness and cardio equipment, a basketball court, an aerobics room, and even a nursery. Families can explore the neighboring Neuse River by hiking, fishing or boating at Milburnie Park. Hedingham Community Park features a playground.

Schools committed to being green

Through the Wake County Public Schools System, students begin their education at Beaverdam Elementary and then graduate to River Bend Middle. Knightdale High’s three-story building was designed with the environment in mind and uses energy and other resources sparingly to reduce waste. It also stages a yearly Campus Beautification Day. All schools score a B-minus overall, according to Niche. Students may also attend Score Academy, an alternative high school with reengagement and reassignment programs. It earns a C-plus score.

Close to popular shopping spots, but not too close

While there aren’t any commercial spaces in the neighborhood, “It’s convenient to Knightdale,” Oldham says. “Just off 540, there’s a huge Target shopping center that also has Home Depot, Kohls, and just got an Academy Sports. That’s where we did most of our shopping because I love Target.” Or New Bern Avenue is just south of the neighborhood. Along this road, there are major retailers like Walmart Supercenter as well as a handful of popular chain restaurants. For a local spot to grab lunch or dinner, patrons like Mike’s Pizza for its simple yet clean atmosphere and authentic New York-style slices.

Right between I-440 and I-540

Hedingham’s closeness to Raleigh means that residents enjoy the capital city’s best amenities with just a quick trip on the interstate. “You’re close enough to downtown where an Uber ride is not too expensive,” Oldham says. It’s about 25 miles or 30 minutes to Research Triangle Park, the innovative employment hub from which the Triangle region gets its name, and Raleigh-Durham International Airport is around 20 miles or 26 miles away.

Community yard sales and downtown events

The neighborhood hosts a semi-annual yard sale, and Oldham says, “That’s where we really got to meet a lot of our neighbors.” Downtown Raleigh also has many local gatherings: The Longleaf Film Festival showcases the community’s artistic scene, while the annual North Carolina ‘Cuegrass Festival brings hot barbecue and live music. Fayetteville Street hosts Food Truck Rodeos and the First Night Raleigh New Year’s celebration, featuring the local Acorn Drop.
