A neighborhood for those on and off campus
West Raleigh makes for a convenient spot near campus for college students, or a vibrant home base for alumni, professionals and families. Both parts of North Carolina State University and all of the all-female Meredith College are located here. So, students and staff are close to the classroom. But all residents can take advantage of campus-area amenities, such as sports stadiums, hip eateries and green spaces. “The big draw is the community feel in the area,” says Ed Williams, Realtor and owner of Edge Realty. “The university brings everybody together. It’s got a real college-town vibe. Everybody turns out for the basketball games. Football is big too.” The universities aren’t the only great schools in the neighborhood, the elementary, middle and high schools all score an A-minus or higher, according to Niche.

A variety of homes that all offer convenience
Those looking to move to West Raleigh will discover a wide array of architecture, ranging from 1950s midcentury modern homes to newly constructed brick condos. “Anything you want, you're going to be able to find it there,” Williams says. “There are even some mixed-use developments, where there’s housing and shops below.” A 1,200 square-foot condo will cost in the high-$200,00s, while a sprawling custom-built home will go for just over $1 million. “Raleigh isn’t cheap. You’re paying for convenience. To get more bang for your buck you're going to have to go to the outskirts,” Williams says. “Homes are sitting on the market for longer than they used to. Most homes aren’t selling for 20 to 30 days and they’re selling for under asking price. That’s 100 percent due to the interest rates. We’re in a buyers’ market. Buyers are getting their choice of what they want.” West Raleigh has a higher number of renters than homeowners.
North Shore Condos on Centennial Campus offer private on campus living.
If you look close, you can find a sprinkling of 21st Century homes in the university area.

Magnet schools attract students from all over the county
Part of the Wake County Public School System, students may attend Olds Elementary and Martin Middle. Both schools earn an A overall grade on Niche. In addition to Honors courses, International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement courses, Broughton Magnet High has a career academy for hospitality, tourism and sports marketing. Specializing in Global Studies & Language Immersion, any rising Wake County 9th grader can apply to the magnet school. It scores an A-minus.

Independent shops and well-know establishments
There are plenty of independent options to choose from, as well. At Reader’s Corner, used books, records and comic books are waiting to be enjoyed. Locals can then head to the Raleigh Brewing Company and order their signature brew or grab a combo at Snoopy’s Hot Dogs and More. For an even greater variety of bars and restaurants, downtown Raleigh is less than five miles away. “Downtown Raleigh has so many open-air restaurants and bars. That’s the place to go for nightlife,” Williams says. “They just passed a law where you can walk around parts of downtown with open containers of alcohol.” From Harris Teeter to Target to Chipotle, West Raleigh residents have access to a bounty of national and regional chains.

Stopping to smell the roses
“West Raleigh is very outdoorsy. You always see people out walking, running and biking,” Williams says. “You have very dense areas that feel city-like, but there are greener areas too.” A visit to The Raleigh Rose Garden provides a tranquil spot to enjoy nature and browse the 60 rose beds. A unique aspect of Isabella Cannon Park is the climbing boulder, which has different levels that offer a challenge for all ages. At Jaycee Park, residents can practice their serve on the tennis or sand volleyball courts. Kids have options with two playgrounds and even pets can join in on the fun at the park’s dog run.

Game day and flea market finds
This is an area with a lot of big-drawing events close by, most of them tied to sports: NC State football games at Carter-Finley Stadium, or NC State basketball and NHL Carolina Hurricanes hockey at PNC Arena. “There’s a lot of attachment to the college,” Williams says. “Young professionals are really migrating to this area. It may be that they have graduated from NC State and they like the area so much that they want to stay.” The biggest single event around is the North Carolina State Fair, held every October. The rest of the year, the grounds host The Raleigh Market, where weekend shoppers can find unique finds at the largest Flea Market in the state.
